Default Accusump Warning!!

First snow and freezing temps have arrived here so I went to unload the Hanson race car out of the trailer where it has been all season un disturbed after a DE at Lime Rock in April. Anyway, rolling it out of the trailer, I opened the door to get in and the inside of the door and drivers seat are covered in oil.
I look behind the seat where the Accusump is mounted and the pic shows what I found. The threaded end cap pushed out the body obviously under pressure and it emptied its contents in the cabin. When I drove it in and parked it in the spring it was not like this. This unit came with the car installed as you see it from previous owner and un-touched by me. I haven't dug into what or how this could have happened while sitting but I will.
The thing that scares me is since I have owned it I have a dozen or so dyno runs and three track days on it and and it could have let go with me in it and at speed and hot temps.
So my warning would be, DO NOT INSTALL AN ACCUSUMP IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT.
Ed

That is the quickest way of turning a Porsche into a Land Rover I have ever seen.

No,the end cap is threaded into the tube, the 2 band clamps are how it is mounted in the car.

What failed? Threads strip? Cap break? Body break?

At first look it seems the threads in the body are stripped out. I will have to remove it from the car and get it on a bench to get a closer look at it. It could be that it is past its point of use and just had enough pressure cycles. But the confusing thing is it happened after the car was shut off and put in the trailer.

Discussion of a similar-sounding failure on another board I frequent:

As I said, it came in the car and I was using it untill I install my dry sump setup. I guess I just streamlined that deadline!

Got it!
Glad it happened when things were not running.......
all that mumbo Jumbo..... our cars at 6600rpm can handle the stock oiling system with no issues. Just have to use good oil , correct fill level, and be smart about warmup process.
That's crazy though.. looks like the hose clamp keeps the top secure.. doesn't look to be threaded, is it?

I recenlty installed mine.
It came with pretty explicit stickers on where exactly to mount the band clamps. (You can see them in orange in the pic below). Is it possible that your clamps were too far inboard and might have distorted the caninster allowing the end cap to blow off?

Mine is in the cowl area, and it's my intent to seal the area so if it leaks no oil will come into the cabin and will hopefully stay contained in the cowl cavity.

May be a lesson that when storing the car the air side should be depressurized?

Wow, that sucks Ed! Glad you weren't driving it when it happened. Hot oil spraying at pressure while you're driving at speed could spell disaster.

I hope to install a Canton at some point in the cowl area by the firewall. Can you provide some details on your install Adam? What psi gauge did you go with? Did you buy Carl's kit, or assemble on your own? Details & pics man please, I need the step by step!

I did the 20-25 PSI EPC valve. I bought mine off ebay new. I didn't use Carl's set up because I wanted to use a sandwich plate to tap into my oil flow. Carl's kit includes some custom fittings that allow you to tap into braided hose cooler lines which he also provides. I didn't see the need to buy custom pieces that I wasn't going to use. I don't have a step by step, but do have some pics at the "official accusump thread". I probably have a few updated pics I could post. Motor isn't in yet, so I have the oil line suspended in the engine bay running out to the shock tower, and then a 90 taking it down the fender well.

BTW, I would not mount it centrally in the cowl if at all possible. I had to do this because my EDIS coil packs are mounted to the left in the pic above. That means the output end had to be routed THROUGH the winshield wiper motor / linkage. A total PIA. If you have the room (no HVAC blower motor), I would move the cannister as far to the right side of the car as possible. Carl has some good pics of his cannister mounted in this position at his website. Makes life much easier.

So Adam, what sandwich plate did you use? Canton has everything with -10an lines(as does Carl with his Canton direct connection to the oil cooler lines set up). The sandwich plate Carl sells has a -8an connection. With the critical factor being with volume of oil flow instead of the pressure, I believe the -8an fitting on his sandwich plate would be a restriction in volume of flow if I used that. I'd like to use a sandwich plate with a -10an fitting that matched the size of the lines. Do you know is there a sandwich plate available for our cars that has a -10an fitting? Or I wonder if Carl's plate could have the fitting changed to the larger -10an to match the lines?
