Cost - below is my short list of parts Eric did. There were basically 2 engine builds and many non-engine items done. I know Eric spent much more time on the car than charged. Total cost was $35,894. Now if you take the original price I paid for the car, add the trips to DEVEK to get the car right, add Eric.... I could be driving a Manarello, 456GT, 355 Spider, etc... I have maybe $90k in the car now, but it's brand new. I can't wait for some track days - maybe with Golden Gate Lotus Club at Buttonwillow on the 13th of October.

Even though it is a lot of $$$, it still comes out to be a car that looks great, and will still probably have comparable performance, and perhaps even beat a lot of those cars you could buy for the same money...

Without listing all the details, I came up with 569 rwhp at 11 psi; very nice.

Again, congratulations, and looking forward to seeing the dyno chart!

As long as your air/fuel is good, don't be afraid to put your foot into it and have some fun.

Unhappy

I'm sorry to say this, but $90 000 USD is insane!

After all........... for $90K I sure as heck would have bought or invested into a different car.

That's my $0.02 CDN

I'd rather have a well built and upgraded 928 than pretty much anything in that price range. I doubt than there is anything with the looks, comforts, handling/grip and power to match it.

I like the concept and the price is after all pretty much what a late 928 would cost new in stock form so it must be a bargain as long as it's kept for a few years.

I can't agree that it will EVER be a bargin, but that does not matter as long as the exercise was done for entertainment and not investment. That being my premise, there are few who believe that even the going market cost of supercharging a shark can be recovered in sales price.

It is like putting a fancy game room in your basement, you do it for your own entertainment.

Let's not confuse spending money on things you choose to from making wise financial investments. I mean come on......we all own Porsches!!!!!!

Joe, I hope you are happy. Is there any other message you want us to take away from your resitation of the facts?

90k is a lot, especially, when guys are selling Cup cars for around that. however, if you did this to a stock S4, with an engine in great shape, Im sure the bill would / could be a lot lower. This is a work of art. Im sure if I just put on the go fast goddies on the holbert car, the bill would be closer to the same as a stroker I would imagine.
That is a first class job. Have lots of safe fast fun in it.

Am I missing something? Tim Murphy's supercharger kit is around $8,000. Isn't a stroker motor two to three times that much? Even that amount of money for the stroker is a lot less than $35,894.

I've never been known to buy a vehicle as an investment, having owned many strange cars like 67 Mini Cooper S with 1380 motor, Renault R5 Turbo II, or how about a 69 Maserati Indy. IMO they are to be fully enjoyed.

The only reason I went for more HP, was due to being passed by my 73 year old father on the Laguna straight in his 95 M3 Dinan Stage 3 car. He has a GTR3 now, so I got him ;-)

No Mark... you can't borrow the engine. The newness hasn't warn off yet.

Pete,

Don't forget my costs include labor for 2 complete rebuilds including massive head work. No matter whose kit you use, parts will cost approximately $10k. If you do the labor, great. Remember, parts and labor are usually 50% + 50%.

My choice for SC instead of a stroker was based on already having a 5.6 litre engine and wanting to maintain better around town drivability. I think I have the best of both, being able to pick up groceries or drive it to the track and have fun.

You mean $20K for a supercharger kit with installation? I'd be happy to provide and fully install Tim's kits on TWO 928s for that price.

Joe,
Glad to hear that you finall got your car back. It looks awsome! Thank you for coming forward again. I had seen your recent post on another board too.

What was the cause of the ovalisation of the cylinders? I ask anyone who has not had direct experince with or extensive knowledge of such ovalisation in the 928 not to speculate.

Congrats Joe.

I would recommend finding a good dyno guy (I assume you may be using Devek) to keep a close eye on things as you do the test. As many have found, the fuel pump runs out of steam shortly over 500 HP. Not sure if the GTS has an upgraded pump, anybody?

I think the extra money Joe spent on his motor will allow even more horespower (porting, headers, etc, etc) than he currently has. I imagine it wouldn't be difficult for him to dial up the boost after he has fully broken in his engine and get over 600 RWHP. I would imagine even much more than that, but I don't want to speculate.

$90K? Well, I imagine this car is a bit faster than almost anything on the road. Joe will no doubt need to do some tweeking here and there to get it even faster, but you could easily spend 2 or 3 times as much.

That's why I bought a 928. I've had enough cars that I would dump money in and it would still be worth squat. The 928 is a wonderful car that deserves being well taken care of and maintained/upgraded.

We should all take note of the TONS of money the ricers spend on their worthless front wheel drive cars. They have no problem changing out everything in their engine compartment with anodized billet aluminum replacements. Beautiful fuel rails, adjustable cam gears, polished intakes, down to the nuts and bolts. These guys spend tens of thousands of dollars on their cars. Some even approaching the amount Joe has spent. I submit that the 928 is worthy, especially if one has the means, of recieving this kind of attention. The 928 is truely one of the most remarkable vehicles ever built, and Joe's is one of best of the best.

Wow,

I was away on holidays for a week and just caught this thread today. I have to say that I personally have been waiting for your response to the installation since you retrieved the car.

The equipment list and picture still does not do justice to the work performed on that GTS. I saw every part of that motor in its completely disassembled state and followed the work all the way to the end. The amount of detail that went into that car is remarkable.

Without dragging out any old flame wars, I would invite any new and old posters to Rennlist to search out topics on the white GTS. This car has a history here on Rennlist and I believe the read is worthy.

Joe Dyer is a very patient man. He also showed a lot of faith in Eric's abilities to complete this car and gave him all the line necessary to hand over the keys to a completed work. My hat is off to Joe for that.

I would also like to thank Joe for staying with this thread to keep the record fair and straight. It's obvious that there are/were a lot of misconceptions about what was going on with that car. There were never any dyno explosions or broken ring lands. There was never any damage done to Joe's car while it was in the hands of Eric. It was an unfortunate chain of circumstances that was fueled by the owner of the black car who left unhappy.

Eric was consumed by that car for 15 months. Imagine the feeling of completing the car while under pressure only to have to make the decision to tell the owner that you are ripping the entire thing down to the last nut and bolt. At the same time being totally trashed on the list for supposedly blowing the motor up (actually, so was I!!). I personally would have to have been put in therapy.

Some of those people don't post here on Rennlist anymore - go figger?
Some of them do.
A very sorted affair that turned out good in the end.

Joe
I hope you get the chance to bring the car down to the 928 International event. It is truely a work of art.

Sincerely
