Oil is Total Quartz Racing 10w50. If there are bearing issues (which I don't have any reason to suspect) they would not prevent the engine from starting.

The engine ran great for two 20 min sessions. First lap of the third session (just after topping off the oil) it sucked oil into the intake and I shut it off. I would guess < 30 seconds from the first sign of any smoke to shutting the engine down.

I'm going to cut the filter open to see if there is any metal inside.

That's the first place to start.

The fact that you say the engine cranks slowly makes me fearful.

I'm not wishing you bad Karma....far from it....I sincerely hope I'm completely wrong.

However, I was fixing blown up 1989GT engines in 1989, fresh from their first track outing.

Because of that long term experience with these engines, I've literally got 20 different variations on pieces for bearing protection, for these engines...all dependent on what the car is intended to do. From driver's education in the parking lot to full blown race engines....and everything in between.

Greg in his first post he states the engine cranking slowly is due to a bad battery. He replaced the battery and it turned over normally.

I see that, now. Thanks for pointing that out.

I saw the 12.7 volts and slow cranking part, only.

Probably everything is just fine, but I would still look inside the oil filter.

With the "soft" bearings in these street engines, I got in the habit of cutting open oil filters Saturday night.....when the track events were two days.

Just wanted to comment on tracking 928 's. I track my stock 120,000km engine (never opened) for 7 years now.. with ZERO engine problems. It has run short twisty tracks and long high speed tracks with no oiling issues. I run 295/30 R18 and 265/35 R18 with R compound and have never lost pressure. I have destroyed everything else along the way.. But the motor is still strong with almost full compression across the board. In my region there are four other 928's who track. Two of which have more track hours then mine and have zero oiling issues. One 928 did have oil failure costing him the motor. I don't really have a point to this post. . Just talking experience.

What year engine?

It makes a difference.

Mine is an 89. Others still running are 86, 87. The failed one was an 89
