Malcolm,
Good to see that your instincts pointed you in the right direction even though the outcome was not as you would have hoped for. Sounds as though it might be a good time for some super bearings from Constantine.

Have been watching this thread and thought this could be one of the problems. This is a classic 5-speed TT failure which results in massive vibrations.
The throw out bearing and missing bolts could have been the cause of the migrating front bearing, or other way round.
At least you now have the answer.
Cheers,

Now I have the diagnosis done I'll revise my winter project funding away from the intake and get the clutch and TT repaired.
When will you have your super bearings for sale Constantine?
Given we are on the edge of winter I do have 5 mths to gather the parts etc

update: the majestic Constantine bearings are in my 928 stock and will be married to a new TT shaft from Greg Brown.
The stub shaft is also being replaced as part of the overall clutch refresh.
Thanks to the gurus who gave TT removal advice of what I refer to as the Bill Ball method that's the way its coming apart up on the MaxJax
