Default Windshield replacement costs and 928 compliment?

I was calling around to get the windshield replaced on my 79 - its badly pitted and leaks.

Two places turned me away because they "don't want to take the risk on a high end car"! I was shopping by phone so they have not seen my car or they would not have been so generous with the compliment but certainly for others it seems like a nice Kudo.

Only one local place has agreed to do it and they want $429. is that inline with current pricing elsewhere?

I bought a windshield off a parts car in a guy's yard. I called one of those mobile windshield fitters. They came and pulled off my old windshield, pulled off the other windshield, and put it on my car. I think the entire thing cost me under $200.

I had a new one put on where I lived for $200 total. I don't think it was a Porsche part but it still fits perfectly.

We just replaced two yesterday using two of the windshields that Roger had in stock. The guys that did it are used all over DFW by most of the high end shops and have done a lot of work for the customer of mine so we got a hell of a deal. If you can get the windshield and it installed for less than $400.00 you are doing very well. Expect to spend over $400 for both.

Found a local place with two brick and mortar locations and great reviews that quoted $259 installed. We talk with them today to find out specifics on glass and service.

May see if they will come out and pull the windshield and come back another day to install so I can have some time to deal with the visible rust and what ever is under the glass.

Pulling the old one is super simple if you have a friend and a heat gun.

One person inside and one outside heating the glass with a heat gun (hair dryer is not enough). Start in the corner heating about a foot length back and forth around 4 inches from the edge. Place your foot on the glass (make sure you have a leather sole shoe, The glass will be very warm, and apply pressure from inside. You will feel the glass move slowly. Don't have to force too hard, maybe 40 - 50 lbs. Then work your way across, heating and pushing. The glass may crack, but you are throwing it out anyway. once you get across, then work down one side , then the other. The bottom will be easiest as you have leverage on the glass now. Wear heavy gloves when handling the glass. Last one I did took me less than 20 minutes to do.

mine 81 had a nice leak from the windshield. turns out when i had it replaces (same people that mark at 928 intl recommended here in town) that he did not even need to use a heat gun. the windshield was 90% separated from the seal!!!!!!!! you could have pushed it out with a good shove. cost about 360 if i remember right...

The guys who did mine used a piece of wire to saw through the adhesive.

The guys who did ours had a battery operated sawsall with a putty knife attachment. Don't know what I'd do with it but I want one.

There's never a bad reason to buy a new tool!

Got to agree with you there. I can always use to to chip ice off the window for that one day we get ice here in DFW.
