Just had my dash redone. That would scare me to death. That isn't happening on mine

Hope they have a different way.

HF sells two different window removers for about $15 each, one is the wire with long poker to slip it initially under the glass, and handles to saw the wire back and forth, the other is a L shaped blade on a handle with a leash. Tip of the blade goes under the glass, guide and hold the angle with the handle and pull on the leash to move it along.

Hot day in the sun, heat gun, etc all welcome.

I'd like to pull my own glass, take my time on some clean up, plus I want to use the glass out of my parts car if it doesn't break.

I think its worth it having a pro do the install though.

Note, there may already be buggered trim bits from previous windshield jobs or painting.

Avoid Chinese glass, look for Sigla or Pilkington.

I remember my 1st '85; owner agreed to replace the windshield as part of the sale due to a small crack. His ins. co. paid $1500 to get one from Germany cause they couldn't find one in the states with the antenna in the glass. So $250-$400 sounds like a bargain to me.

I've done that too. It works, but it does use quite a bit of energy and getting it through can be a challenge. The heat gun method has been the easiest for me to do, and created the least damage and mess. The other methods certainly do work.

Seeing how it comes out can help the installer see how it goes in (good if replacing a factory install, otherwise mainly fuggetaboutit).

You need to use an inductive removal tool....no damage to anything

I would love an excuse good enough to buy one of that type, not sure which brand I prefer, but its not that essential for a windshield vs cost.

That's what we use here. A guy inside the car and one outside makes this a little easier. Heat gun helps but is dangerous, can cause air bubbles to form in the laminate if allowed to stay in one place too long.

If you have access to one of those carpet-style dash overlays, I'd put it on to protect your dash before this. Otherwise protect your dash with fender covers taped down.

The key seems to be patience, patience, patience. It takes time and patience. I've broken a few windshields by running out of patience and trying to pry up too soon. It's old glass and very "set" in its ways...

BTW - at the PRI show last year I found a company that has the pattern to make a 928 windshield in scratch-resistant polycarbonate. Very light, good for racers. Problem was minimum order was 4 and I couldn't justify it.

Just an FYI - there is a plexi version available.

Windshield replaced.

$283 out the door and done in 1.5 hours, PPG glass and they recommended using the butyl tape again.

No rust under the old windshield and wow what a difference a clear windshield makes.

Car seems to run better, sure that just me!!

I just had mine done here in KC...made decision to go with an outfit up north that had A+ with Better Business Bureau. He has done them before and did a magnificent job. I brought him the car. He had to buy the replacement from our friends in California..they aren't plentiful.

The old sealant had pulled away from my old one; otherwise it was in good shape but it broke on removal; they did not use butyl tape..but the urethane stuff from Dow. It was about $529.ish and is on the high side compared with other figures in this thread however as we were working on the project details I spoke to these guys several times, their followup was second to none and were every bit if not more pleasant in person; the owner did the job. The shop was spotless. Anyone in the KC area needs the tip PM me.
