Default Headlights are acting up

Tonight I was gonna make a pizza run but the headlights wouldn't pop up or turn on. Parking & fog lights worked just fine but no dice for the headlamps.
Made the run in the Honda (the pizza was tasty), did some forum searching and wandered out to the garage to troubleshoot fuses and relay. Tried the lights again before pulling up the carpet and now the lights work just fine. They're mocking me at this point. Is this a sign of a failing relay? Thanks for your insights as always.

Could also be the switch, although mine have not yet failed to go up, but occasionally they like to do the up and down thing nonstop. A few twists of the switch and all is good.

Ha! That up down cycling sounds annoying. I just gave the switch a few blasts of Deoxit and some exercise. I'm sure they'll work fine til I'm in some remote area at night!

Next time they don't work, try and manually lift the lights using the **** on the head light motor. If they go up and then turn on, it's a sign of a failed relay, if they don't want to go up and the motor engages and tries to bring them down as you're bringing them up, it's a sign of a failed switch

None of these symptoms are all that conclusive here.

Start with the easiest things - clean/check the motor fuse - if the motor doesn't work you will have these symptoms - and everything will work OK if you wind the pods up manually (you have to remove the rubber weatherproof cover on the motor first).

Haven't had time to run any of the above diagnostics yet-but went for a nice drive & tried them out when I stopped at my destination. They went up maybe 10% of the way w/no lights. Got annoyed and went to do my errands. Came back and they had retracted flush while I was gone. They proceeded to work fine the other 15 or so times I tried them. Hopefully I'll have some time to dive into the CE panel this week some time and do some inspecting and cleaning.

A Honda is almost a required tool for owning a 928. Too bad we can't carry one in the trunk at all times.

Next time they won't pop up, try leaving the switch on and manually cranking the lights up with the **** on the motor.

There is extensive headlight circuit troubleshooting guide and circuit descriptions, including diagram of inside the headlight relay, for the mid year cars within one of the electircal training documents inside the 2.51 file inside the Morehouse CD's.

So here's the latest: lights didn't work so I popped the rubber cover off/the dial on the top was spinning back and forth but the armature wasn't moving. When the dial stopped, I tried turning by hand-but the motor would kick in and reverse direction and the lights just stayed where they were. With the key off I was able to raise the lights by turning the dial. I'm kinda flummoxed at this point. It doesn't seem electrical in nature.
