Default 928 hard to work on - DIY?

I dont think so, but the problem is that the engine bay is so narrow with the car being wide and long that all work on the engine from the "up" is extremely akward - ahhhh, me back...me back!

Working on the 911/912 is pure yoga compared to this but the access to the engine bits is much better in the 928

Working on any car is like learning a new dance. Once you've been around the dance floor a couple of times, your moves improve and you find an economy of motion. Unless you're me, I can't dance for beans.

it actually has its advantages. it would have been better had they made the sides of the engine bay just an inch wider . otherwise, besides the headers being a bitch to change or remove, the car is pretty easy to work on.

I think if they had made the hood wider, say about 2 inches from the outer edge top of fender before it starts curving down to wheel, and made proper inside wheel wells, there would be a hell of a lot more room down the engine sides and other items would be easier to access ?

I am thinking something like this.

I have seen them cheaper if you shop around. I think it would save my 54 year old back.

Dean,
I was thinking about the same thing. If you elevate the 928 enough it is easier on the back.

Or just strengthen & improve the endurance of your back . Quite possible if you're a serious DIYer in life.

If I have to work below the air box I have an old quilt that I throw over the engine and then mount from the front to do the work. My wife has taken some photos which don't look all that flattering and I am hoping they haven't been stolen from the Cloud but it works for me for the number of times I have been in there.
Redoing fuel lines, CPS and grounds this weekend so I will be in there again.

Lift bars to get it at the right height for you.... Then throw on some fender covers , and you can work over the engine for hours.

Completely agree on the liftbars and fender covers.

Despite the seeming complexity of the car, it's surprisingly straightforward to work on.

Pull the rad and fans and stand there in the engine bay, works great! everything in reach! (wait-except for that 13mm socket...lol)

The greatest advantage the 928 has as a DIY prospect is right here.

Can you name any other car with owners as knowledgeable as many of the members of this forum, and who share their knowledge with such generosity and patience, and conduct themselves in such a gentlemanly way? The dedicated parts suppliers that sponsor Rennlist are another invaluable resource.

The presence of Rennlist alone gives me confidence to tackle 928 jobs that would be way out of my league without it, backed by well-documented write-ups almost all of which are written by people here.

Consider not just the car but the "ecosystem".

The Audi UrS forum on quattroworld is just as good as this forum, but you are correct that helpful car forums like this are few and far between. I got lucky that both the cars I own have very active online communities.

I echo the quattroworld comment (although in reference to the A8 forum), and from what I see, this 928 forum has all the BT and "gentlemanly" qualities... quite the "ecosystem" to be sure...
