Default Who can copy/supply keys these days?

I really need a spare key, I only have one. I emailed Wally a while back but have not heard back to find out if he can supply them. Does anyone know how to get them done these days? I'd like to try ordering one from the VIN before sending mine off to be copied.

Thanks
-Joel.

Just a few weeks ago I received my spare from the Porsche dealer - ordered with the VIN. I had to wait about 3 weeks to get it. I picked it up while at work so I didn't have the 928, but as soon as I got home I tried out the key and IT DIDN'T WORK!!!

It had the same shape as my old key but was much smoother. I called the dealer and they basically told me "oh well, we gave you what you ordered". Great service huh? Pay $55 for a spare key and it doesn't work!

I just don't like the idea of ordering a key based on the VIN. You see a nice shark or Ferrari, get the VIN and order from dealer. Follow the car to work and you can steal it so easy. This seems like a security flaw in a Windows OS IMHO.

I had to have my vehicle registration and my drivers license (photo id) with me to order AND pick up the key. They told me ONLY the person whose name is on the registration can get the key.

Try it in the hatch lock Beth. I ordered one, and my locks have NOT been changed. It does not work in the doors (worn more, even with 75k), but in the hatch, it works.

Tried it in everything - doors, hatch, glove box . . . .

928 International. Sent the key into them on Monday, had 4 copies plus original back on Wednesday. About $25/key I think.

Oh yeah, you need the code, but if you can scan your key that would be good enough for them...

I had a spare made at a locksmith shop in Reno several years ago. Big shop, not a little hole in the wall. They even had a blank 928 key on the rack! Couldn't believe it. Anyway, took a couple minutes to copy mine (it was worn, head was breaking off) and it worked perfectly.

Before that, I had also ordered a key from Porsche with my VIN #. Guess what...it didn't work. This was back when Porsche had their headquarters in Reno, but they didn't have a dealership there. They didn't charge me for the key, but quoted a HUGE price for new locks and ignition...no thanks.

Of course, it is probably better to simply send a key to 928 Intl as Mark did, but in my case the shop had what I needed and was able to make it work....but then again maybe Beth or Joel wants to visit Reno sometime soon.

Good Luck,
Rich.

Call a local locksmith and ask for a referral (if they cannot provide the service). I found a local shop (Non dealer) that can cut four sided high security keys, in the same manner - The best part of it all is that you get to test it on the spot, and if doesn't work - you don't pay.

Good Luck

As has been mentioned we do have blanks and the special adapter to hold the key at the correct angle to trace a copy . Old very worn keys however make a new very worn key copy . Porsche unfortunately has trouble making new keys by vin# and code . The key machine did not like making the trip from Reno to Georgia (a few years ago)and spits out a bad key about one-half the time . Some dealers are charging $80 to order a key by vin # . We also can restack the shims in your existing locks to all work with just one key . I can copy a key for $25 .

Do the early 928's also have the high security keys?

I'm thinking I might order one from the dealer, as I don't want to send mine off in the mail. If it does not work, I can probably sand it down until it does to simulate the wear.

I could probably get the code for my key, as I have a spare door lock and a bunch of the lock plates (or whatever you call the tumblers in a high security lock like this.) I can install plates until the lock works and then I will know the plate numbers needed for my key. However I would not know if those numbers translate directly to the the key number or not, or which end of the lock to start from. Hmmm.

Thanks for the help,
-Joel.

Ditto, Maybe I'll make a road trip to 928 Intl. That way the car is on hand to test the key. Might save some $$'s on shipping keys back and forth.

Provided this D@MN weather clears up enough for me to get out of Dutch!
