It happened this morning on the way into work again.
At the drive thru at Dunkins I placed my order stepped on the gas and started moving and it just stopped.

This time it was more difficult to start. I could turn the key and it just wouldn't start.
Luckily I was able to roll it backwards into a space. About 1 minute later I turned the key and she started right up. No problems driving to work also ( Approximately 50 miles.. all highway ).

As mentioned, I replaced the ignition switch with a new one.
Check the battery terminals. they are tight.

The gas tank is full.
It's raining here.. Could moisture may be an issue? In the past when it occurred it happened when it was early in the AM.

Open to suggestions...

Thanks
-Dan

Hi Dan, I was wondering how many of the things in post 4 have you completed?

Now would be a good time to see if you have a hot post cover, if not use deoxit spray on the 14 pin connector then fit the cover you can use one from a 1988 S4.

Also if there is water dripping into the CE panel from a worn blower box seal ,
NOTE any rust on the blower box bolts indicates water intrusion.

Check the ground strap at the battery see if water has gotten into the chassis connection, use deoxit

I replaced the green wire about a year and 1/2 with new.

I was unable to find deoxit locally at the part stores.. so that hasn't been done...

When you refer to "Running Relays", which relay's do you mean?

Battery terminals are clean, but not sprayed.

I'll likely check the grounds next ..

thanks

get a fuse relay chart from www.928gt.com verify you have the correct part number relays and they are in the correct spots
also make sure the correct fuses are in the correct spots and the empty slots are indeed empty

XVI fuel injection relay
XVII fuel pump relay

use deoxit spray on the front and rear of the CE panel,
make sure it gets into the fuse spade connections on the back of the panel .

NOTE as your fuse may show good but the power stops where the blade on the wire to holder meet.

Dan,
Did it crank but not start, or was it electrically 'dead' ?
May have a contact/shorting issue at starter or jump post.

None of my local "car parts" stores had DeOxIt either.

Try Radio Shack.

try amazon for the deoxit ,
they have the best prices and if you order enough things, over 35.00
then the shipping is free and usually shows up in less than 4 days

It died going home from Work yesterday.. Pouring rain and doing 70mph in the left lane and it just stopped and all the console lights were on.

I was able to pull over and got it started again. Luckily I was only about a mile from a rest area and I had a backup Fuel pump relay. I swapped it out and It didn't have the problem for the remaining 1/2 hour drive. Also noticed a slight studder I had also went away after swapping the relay.

Needless to say it will be sitting until the weekend when I will address the other possibilities. Also ordered replacement relays for both Injectors and fuel pump which should be arriving tomorrow.

The Fuel pump relay I removed was only about a year old....

Did you test/replace the fuel pump fuse?

How old is the fuel pump itself? Original? How about fuel strainer? Original?
If the fuse and relay are replaced with new and problem remains, I would personally look at fuel pump area for fuel delivery issues.

Cheers!

No idea on the age of the pump. I've had the car for 3 years so it's at least that old.

The fuel filter is about a year old.

Is periodic stopping of the fuel pump typical of a pump that's on it's way out?
