Default 928 beeeeeeep

so i trailered my '88 928 s4 auto from toronto to tampa

and everything went well. (wel the uhaul was a pos which killed an ac compressor and tossed a belt and leaked ps fluid for 5 days and the tranny smoked all through the mountains.. but the 928 part went well!)

UNTIL i arrived. i had pulled the ground strap off the battery for the tow, and it was off for about 5 days. when i reconnected the strap and jumped in to turn the ignition and back it off the trailer there was a brand new ridiculously loud beeeeeeep when i turned the key. it stopped after 30 seconds or so. never heard it before. weird enough i suppose. well in the past 3 days the beep randomly happens while i am driving, sometimes its a random fast beep-beep-beep, sometimes a hesitant "be.." and then stops and sometimes it beeps continuously until i turn off the ignition and turn it back on. usually it beeps at start up, then stops, then does one of the above... i have only heard it with the key in the run position...

what the heck did i break?

Aftermarket alarm gone haywire? Stuck door chime? Does it sound like an alarm of some sort or like something electrical stuck? Where does it come from?

no aftermarket alarm. sounds like an electrical ignition buzzer (if i had ever heard one before in this car). comes from directly behind the instrument cluster. vigorous driving/shaking and lots of experimental tapping and dash pounding has no effect...

There is nothing installed from factory behind the pod which beeps. Only thing there might be a vacuum leak but this sounds different. There can be a door/seatbelt chime installed, but it should be directly under the radio.

hmm. the sound very much seems centralized behind....

_______

and thats as far as i got before leon speed's post shook my brain free and i realized what it was. the PO installed and after market radar detector that i had forgotten was there. i had some stuff stashed up in the drivers foot well for the haul and something must have bumped its power button. so it's been going off like crazy since it got bumped....

ugh. another way my 928 has made me feel silly.

Does this means you're expecting a lot of fines? :-)

Here's the culprit. Literally never turned it on in the 2.5 years I've had the car... Coming out this weekend for sure.

Is that an UNGO system? If so, you are going to have your work cut out for you to get all the "stuff" removed.

Time to restitch the steering wheel rim methinks. Actually a fairly easy job - I've done two.

heh. you noticed huh? funny enough, another PO thing... had giant canadian tire slide on wheel cover which i peeled off about 2 days ago. I was actually thinking of updating to a nice momo. The steering wheel is pretty much one of the things i really don't like, feel like it dates the interior.
