Default Deeper Center Console Glove Box

Some time ago I developed this Deeper Center Console Glove Box to replace the cassette box that came in many of the 928s. This one mounts in the same location as the original and with the same mounting holes. (I'm not sure about how to mount it in the cars that didn't have one originally.)

It is made out of four separate ABS plastic formings and is about an inch and a half deeper than the original box and puts the top at a nice level to rest your right (or left, for the RHD cars) elbow. The top is two layers of sturdy plastic, so it can take the pressure from leaning on it getting into the car. The top is also hinged in back rather than on the side.

Each of the separate four pieces takes about an hour to make, so that has run the price up to $350. The finished box it covered in a thin layer of closed cell foam and then leather, usually Black. Other colors may be available depending on my ability to match what is requested. Or, I may cover one in your leather.

The dark one in the pictures doesn't yet have the two top components glued together.

Send me a PM and we can discuss the timing and availability and the details, such as color of leather, for your 928.

Very nice Jerry, looks terrific! Is there any kind of button or latch ... is one even needed?

Jerry,

Very nice product. IF I didn't already have the deeper one that Paul Champagne produced about 5 years ago, I'd immediately order this one. I REALLY like the deeper box for more storage area - that is easily accessible.

Build a cup holder into it, then you'll have something.

Yes, Andy, they are available to be finished. It will take me a couple of weeks after we decide on any particulars, like just in black or something else. What is your interior color, or colors?

Thanks, Tim. I'll try to find my "cork" hide and if it looks close at all, I'll send you a piece for comparison. If not, I guess we need to be looking for some leather that will match.

Ahhh... No!

Just think of the ergonomics, you have a 5 speed - where is your elbow when changing gears? If there was a Big Gulp there how would you do it?

In any case even with a deeper unit and an auto car - this isn't deep enough to be stable for sharp accelleration or braking... and how do you grab the cup - its right under your right elbow - so it might just be easier to grab it with your left hand...? So you brake and the lid slams down on top of the cup...

I think this is just a bad location for a cup holder...

Jerry - is there a way to bury the latch mechanism in the moulding at the front edge (e.g. shorten the box interior a little and just have a slot for the tongue? - the spare blanked area to the sides of the latch would be excellent for Audio/USB jack mounting spots. This would clean things up nicely.

I know - I know... even more work and time to build. It could be great though.

Something like this maybe: Panel USB/Line In

Direct connect to many modern head units, or add a USB power supply for charge only from the power outlet.

Wiring is easy though the console - mine is like this already, but not integrated in the armrest shell - Works great. I will one day rework this to reduce the size of the mounting box (it's just too big) - possibly even integrate the whole thing into the stock shell.

Alan, That is a great idea on both fronts.

Jerry, I do think Alan has a good point on "hiding" the latch outside (inside) the box. Sure, it will make the box slightly smaller, but if the USB ports and such can be integrated cleanly, it would make for a very slick and professional looking accessory. I would be highly interested in one like that!

How about one that swings out from the side? "built in" doesn't have to mean vertical. I made myself a prototype of this and am happy with it except that it's not tall enough for one for the passenger side as well. It interferes just a bit with the seat belt latch, but not enough to bother me. Cup is in perfect position for use and yet I can still rest my arm on the top of the cassette holder.

I really like the USB idea, at the moment mine is in the passenger parcel shelf, which isn't at all convenient while driving.

How about a double cup holder that temporarily attaches to the console to the right of the shifter ? Unclips when not needed and no drill holes.

Alan, great idea!!! Looks nice. I would purchase the deeper console if it had this as a option... would prefer a smaller solution like you mentioned but very nice!!!

Keep us posted, I'm game with IPOD/Headphone jack integration... if you're up for it and it makes sense!

Keep the cool ideas coming.

Bryan
