No you don't need to remove the side skirt.

When I changed mine (8 years ago), I only needed to slide the new one in place.
Before putting the new one in place, make sure that the track is clear.
What I remember though is if you try to remove it by pulling it upward, you will split it in two leaving one part in the track!

Edit: Just read your last post and, if I remember, I remove the remaining part by putting some water with soap and pull it out. In parts maybe. Good luck.

Bertrand,
That is what has happened. The PO had removed the molding by pulling it up. The remainder is lodged in the groove. How do I get it out of the groove so that I can slide the new one in?

Just read your last post and, if I remember well, I removed the remaining part by putting some water with dish soap in there and pull it out. In parts maybe.

Good luck.

Bilal928s4, sound like your main problem is the remnants in the track. If you can't get it out using a scrwdriver or some blade to slide it out, towards the rear of the door opening, then I think you will have to strip everything and get more forceful.

I would try silicone spray and a flathead screwdriver first,

You have to have the big screws in place before installing the molding. It covers them and the screws,
