Default timing belt change

I'm new to 928 ownership. I purchased my car a few months back and an in the process of changing the timing belt. It's an 85 32V.
I'm at the stage where the new belt is on and I began turning the engine to check the timing marks. I'm a little past TDC and believe I'm off 1 tooth.
Question: do I stop here and try to adjust, or am I safe continuing to turn the engine (clockwise) until I can stop it back in the 45 position?
I'd feel safer readjusting the belt in the 45 position but not sure how far off it can be before valve interference.
Thanks
Dave

Welcome to the 928 community here on rennlist!

Interesting to note that this is your first post since joining back in 2009.

You might want to refer to Dwayne's write-up on TB replacement, the link to which is located in the New Visitor...FAQ topic posted at the top of this forum.

Good luck!

One tooth is OK to continue on around, if that is all that it is off. If you are not sure, post some pics of the top of each cam gear (showing the notch at the back, and the reference mark) as well was the crank mark.

With the crank at the 45 degrees before TDC mark, the notches at the back of the cam gears should both be three teeth to the left of the reference notch (15 crank degrees per tooth, at the cam gear).

Cheers,

Thumbs up

Thanks for the quick replies. I didn't have any luck searching for that particular piece of information. I thought it was probably OK but wanted some reassurance.
I have the belt adjusted and will get everything back together tomorrow.
Thanks again.

Welcome to Rennlist.

Exactly what Jim (jcorenman) said.
If you're 1 tooth off, you should readjust the gear.

Hey Dave, welcome.
Most TB/WP guides are either for the 16V engine or the S4, it's hard to find a lot on the S3.
Scott (Syoo8) did a great picture thread on his 86.5 last year. I would check that out as well.
