Default The Supercharger is on again.

I put the supercharger prototype back on last night. I had taken the prototype off to draw it up and have it professionally machined. I haven't done any tuning yet. The car is far stronger than before and runs normal. I am making just over 4 psi. That means 400 crank HP give or take a few due to various factors. I built the prototype myself mainly with a jigsaw and a drill. It is really rough and besides the boxy design it has several build features that are restricting flow. These faults will go away with the professionally machined version. I will be installing a water/alcohol misting system this week. Hopefully I will get a little more power with that. I also am working on an air to water intercooled version. Once I get the AWIC going 500 crank hp should be no problem. The M112 should be capable of making close to 600 crank hp on the 5 liter 928.

OF course I went on a freeway cruise tonight. The car is fast. It has no flat spots in acceleration anywhere. I seem to remember having a bit of a lull with the shift to 3rd at about 90. That lull is gone and 110 comes before 90 used to. Well I was king of the road tonight on my cruise. That is....until this mysterious Mercedes showed up. This Mercedes came from behind and I saw nothing but tail lights. Ouch, Well if I had been in the right gear it would have been different I thought. Nope, 3 pulls against this car and each the same. It was pulling away. The faster we went the more steadily he pulled away. I began to think I had imagined my magnificent gain in power. I cruised behind him to see the badging, it still had the dealer plates. It was a 2003 CL55 AMG. I was very relieved to find that this is a 493HP/516TQ 5.0 liter supercharged intercooled V8 5 speed. I didn't feel quite as bad after that.

Sounds like you are perfecting the system. I wish you that everything lasts...

And just for clarification: The AMG's 5-Speed is an automatic.

Good job Andy!

But I do hope you get your intercooled version going soon so you can get rid of the misting system as according to our bud Corky, a misting system is a band-aid at best, and should be used only as a last resort as there is no substitute for a proper intercooler.

Just so you'll know what to expect, once you get your intercooler on there and can run 10 psi, you'll be cranking out 432 rwhp (..85% intercooler efficiency).

Nice story regarding the CL55 AMG, what a car! Don't feel too bad since he has quite a bit more horsepower than you at this point. And just for being honest regarding the outcome, you get to affix a 'gold star' on your windshield today!

I've been thinking about posting a kill thread since there's been quite a few since the install, most notably a 12.9 second supercharged Mustang.

Andy,

The new supercharged Mercedes are awesome. They rate the power a little lower on the new E55's but it is BS. According to the Mercedes tuners I spoke to, the new E55's dyno at the same RWHP as the S55's & CL 55's - 407 RWHP stock. Here is a link to the S55's dyno run: http://www.mbautowerks.com/performance/00010/00010.html The new S600's are even quicker with their twin-turbo V12's.

Keep-up the good work on the 928! We'll catch 'em!

Thanks everyone.

Lagavulin, I would really like to see your kill list. You should start a thread or if you fear of flames you can PM me. I agree with you on the misting system, intercooled is much better. I really just want to see if it works. Theres are 2 people here on the board that have used them successfully, Jim Nowak on his mercedes, and the single turbo 82? 928 guy. (his has been on for around 15 yrs)

John,
Yes I have recieved the circutboard. It looks great. I hope to hook it up no later than this weekend.

Andy,
400hp with 4lbs of boost, that is a well designed intake. You can pull over 500, the water intercooler is the key factor for more boost = HP. when you are ready I will be your first customer for the intake. Don’t let those slow AMG cars intimidate you.

Steve the the 400 hp # is just a simple calculation and may actually vary due to several factors when I do get to the dyno. 316x(19.2/14.7)=413.

I Should have some manifolds inlets and pulleys to sell within 1 month. Do you have the 85-86 heads or the 87+ heads. I ask because the port shape is slightly different. Do you want to use the Jag blower or the one you already have?

I am thinking that someone could use my parts and do the non IC system for definately less than $3k. They could do the IC version for about $4.3K this assuming they used the rebuilt blower and includes a larger TB and injectors. The 85-86 may not need the TB or injectors so you may subtract $300-$400 but YMMV.

The rebuilt Jag blowers can be purchased for about $600 from www.canadiansupercharger.com. They once quoted me $390 with a $200 core charge so $590 USD. A brand new one sold on ebay for $432 this week. Here is the link.. You can also buy a brand new Jag blower for about $1650 from the Jag dealer. If enough people are interested I will redesign the manifold to use a brand new MP112 from Magnuson which has a built in by-pass valve.

I hope to make it to the drag strip tomorrow night.

Can't wait to see the drag strip results. Any chance of a dyno sheet anytime soon?

drnick,
This system would not fit a 16 valve engine as it is. I feel that I could design the manifold easily enough if I had a car to work with, but I think the air flow sensors would be a challenge.

John, Pete,
Those results will have to wait untill I can take a day off. I can't wait to see them myself.

I picked up most of the machined manifold parts from the shop this week. I am pleased with the outcome. I will have to say that the prices I stated look like they may be a few hundred more though.
