Default Front window tint ?

Anybody ever try or consider using Air 80 Blue by Llumar on their 928s front wind shield ?

I would rather not get a rug to cover the 87's dash.

Added a set of Paul Jaeger's vent overlays to cover up micro cracks starting on the vents ... and they look great.

Buuuuuut now that I'm is SWFL....I'm thinking I have to use a dark tint on the back 3 windows & a lighter tint on the DS & PS windows .....

but that still leaves the front at the mercy of mama nature & would hate to see the dash and pod crack into oblivion.

Thanks for any input,
Tom

You can use 3M Crystaline on the front windshield. It is not even necessary to go as dark on their film to get the same heat rejection and UV protection as "ordinary" window film. Check out the FAQ at this Jacksonville business: http://www.awtjax.com/automobile.php
And this one: http://www.firstcoastglasscoatings.c...Faq's.html

Cheers!

I used a 50% tint which does help with heat control and uv rays. Crystalline is supposedly the top of the line and their demo is neat showing how it doesn't allow heat to transfer through the film. I just used regular film though.

Mine had tint on front windshield when I purchased the car... first thing I did was remove it.

Imagine looking down a hot highway on a sunny afternoon and you can see the heat rising. That is what it looked like. It wasn't clear enough and seemed to distort the image like the heat reference. I would say don't do it.

Which brand was on there that caused the distortion?

I'm very curious about comment on the 3M Crystalline for the windshield. I was always skeptical about a covering for the windshield, but would like to hear if the Crystalline would be reasonable to use there. I hear good things about it for the other glass in the car regarding infared/heat rejection.

My apologies to Tom (FatBoy) for the hijack, but to answer MainePorsche's question, I was told by the installer that you can not see it once installed, it is perfectly clear. I plan on installing it on my 90GT project once I get to the windshield install point. I think someone else on the list already has it installed, perhaps they can chime in with their experience.

Cheers!

Slightly OT, but has anyone tried to use a "ResQ-Me" type glass-breaker tool on a tinted window?

I have concerns about the ability of the tool to break glass covered by tinting film, and just how much the film holds the shattered glass together.

Thanks Tom for your patience, and thanks Carl.

This may be informative to us both.
I am considering 40 for the rear glass(es), 60 for the windows, and 70 for the windshield.
Mainly doing it for heat retardance - our cars have so much glass. No wonder they added the rear AC.

The link is from the Tesla Forum. Pic shows the car with 40 on the rear and 70 on the front windows

Great timing! Unless I receive info to convince me otherwise, I am actually going to get (within the legal limit for both Hawaii and my legal home of California):

-AIR 80 (Windshield)
-FormulaOne "Pinnacle" Ceramic (Everything Else)

I don't really care too much about darker or lighter per se as much as I care about what gets blocked, how much, and what are the results. Less UVA & UVB = better; less heat (same thing?) = better.

As an example- last I checked- any good sunblock should block both UVA & UVB- but last I checked, most block one and not the other.

Why am I doing this?
-I live in Hawaii
-Driving in Hawaii often means moving at a snails pace on a section of our...um... Interstate highway system
-To protect from UVA & UVB all around and reducing heat & glare
-the current tint is kinda crappy and doesn't even offer decent visibility looking outward. (The hatch is so bad, in fact, that if an HPD car (often called a K-Mart Special (by others) as they often have a single blue light on top!) tried to pull me over, I probably wouldn't even notice them! This, in my opinion, is not a good thing.)

Oh, and did I mention I live in Hawaii???

In the past two months, I have been to the beach twice- at the end of the day, at that! . However, in the two or so months I've been driving Ele, I've noticeably tanned. A lot.

When Ele is parked and I don't use my windshield thing (from Cover King), the interior turns into an oven. And... my car is black- which can't help.

Anyhoo... I should be getting my tinting done in the next week or two and will post before & after pics.

The installer who is a buddy of mine said it was 3M... that's all the specifics he told me. He did say that he was surprised to see the effect it had when looking through it. Unsure if it is because we get very hot here in the Central Valley (107 yesterday) but the PO was an older gentleman and parked inside his garage but did drive it regularly. The tint had been on for about 4 years.

Hope this helps. I liked the idea as well but was just enough to bother my eyes so I pulled it off. Very happy I did.

Default CTX30

Thanks, maybe I'll hold off on the front glass.
About a week ago I had Llumar CTX30 put on my 2015 Subaru WRX. Supposedly has the ability to greatly reduce heat and has no metal in the films dye.

The car is Subaru's silver ice color and I asked for (paid for) same shade on all 5 windows. I thought they said it was 35%. It looks very nice IMHO. Seems to be dark enough and visibility is very good.

I'm thinking I would use that tint on the DS & PS window and as dark as legal on the 928 back 3.

Went with a shop that a few of the locals said was the best and in biz for about 7 years.

Tom

PS: Didnt a Porsche engineer once call the 928 Porsche's hottest oven on wheels ?

Tom, I think I have to agree with you on not going with windshield coverage and revert back to my original skepticism on doing so. Unblemished, undistorted front vision can not be mucked with. Heat retardation will have to be via the other glass coverage.
