Default 2.54 gearing change in auto

I have a set of 2.54 final drive gears from a late model auto trans that I plan to install in my nephew's 85. I have seen some older threads that there is not enough clearance to replace this with the transmission still in the car. I assume this is with the fuel tank installed. Does anyone know if I can do this without removing the transmission? Can I just pull the fuel tank instead?

Thanks

Are those parts even compatible from 89 to 85?

I assume so since I did the same swap on my '88. I only changed the ring and pinion, not the carrier.

Im told the carrier can come out in-car. I have to do this 'soon', just have not yet.

Looks entirely do-able.

Once the carrier is out, there is no reason why you can't remove the pinion and the pinion bearing carrier assembly....although it may be tough to grab onto, with the entire rear differential case attached.

You should be able to correct the new pinion depth with the shims under the pinion bearing carrier.....You will want to be "armed" with an assortment of pinion shims. Be sure and replace the two "O-rings" associated/inside the pinion shaft. A new pinion nut is also a virtual requirement.

Check out this thread from atb.

This was the one I was remembering that showed pics of the lack of clearance in removing the rear carrier with the ring gear attached. This one is LSD and mine is single pull. Will I have the same issues? Can I just pull the tank or is this not an option either?
