Why do you want so badly to create artificial categories?

I would sort the cars from most fun downwards! ;-)

Or coolest color combinations on the early cars.

The cars before the S brakes. Stopping power isn‘t on the same level as later models but I purchase my cars from the driving experience view.
In Europe there’s no need to buy an non S car because so much S cars are sold from 80 on.

Series? could be 911 speak? (like G series)

I've always thought of it in model variations, per market. I left out japan cuz i don't know it off the top of my head.

74-76 prototypes
77 RoW
78-79 RoW
78-79 US
80-83 row
80-83 row S
80-82 US
83-84 US S
84-85 Row S
85-86 US S
86 RoW S
86.5 US S
CS
GT
GTS

Then there are all the special versions like weissach and anniversary etc, and the countless options that made many many one of one 928s.

It is no easy task for new guys to get their head around this due to the proliferation of abbreviated "generalizations" that proliferate the modern information stream.

How do you distinguish 77 RoW from 78 RoW?
To my knowledge, they were all 1978 Model-Year cars. Of course, the early ones were more preproduction than real production cars.

Yes i missed a few S4 SE... and japan, ...others.

I consider "77" to be the cars built in what would have been the 1977 model year ...so January of 77 to august of 77. "78" model year is unique because it turned out to be around 19 months long.

I think more importantly to classiccarbuyer's question is the following, sent to me by another member last night. I won't reveal their identity here because he could have just posted it here and didn't. I've never seen this information before:

SERIES DESIGNATION

78 L SERIES

79 M SERIES

80 A PROGRAMME

81 B PROGRAMME

83 D PROGRAMME

85 F PROGRAMME

86 G PROGRAMME

87 H PROGRAMME

88 J PROGRAMME

89 K PROGRAMME

90 L PROGRAMME

91 M PROGRAMME

92 N PROGRAMME

93 P PROGRAMME

94 R PROGRAMME

95 S PROGRAMME

The use of a letter to designate a model-year talks to me

Now, how can we define the limit between early 78 and late 78, objectively?
Which car is the last "early" (or 77) and which is the first "real" 78, by example?
The production date is usually not accurate because you can find preproduction cars for every model-year (like the four early 928 CS's produced in June/July 1987, so during the H programme but with J letter VIN/engine/gearbox).
By the way, what is the order number of number 1, 128-0001 or 127-0001?

I understand that Michael Benno has shared this link which gives an accurate enough description: https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...O2El9yuH8V-duY

That lettering does seem to correlate with the 1980 VINs, which start with 92A as the first three digits...

Edit: Also correlates with this link: https://www.stuttcars.com/porsche-92...s-vin-numbers/

I had never seen this lettering scheme called out until now, either.

So where does the 86.5 fit in?
As it is a mix of the "S" and "S4" body, suspension, brake and exhaust parts?

Thank you?
