Hey just a note about that first posting; I'm not sure where I got it but one thing for sure, I didn't do it myself. I picked it up somewhere. The notation on it says "production" and "sales". I can't defend it, not sure where I got it. I did a little more research into the topic and found some reference that "Porsche never released the actual production numbers". Oh well, not many around here,

regards,

P

Default Porsche 928 Series years?

Someone referred to their 1979 928 as a "series 1" car.
Are 928's categorized this way?
Anyone know the years that constitute which "Series" a given 928 is?

If I had to guess:
928 Series 1 - 1978-1982
928 S Series 2 - 1983-1986
928 S4 Series 3 - 1987-1989
928 GT Series 4 - 1989-1991
928 GTS Series 5 - 1992-1995

Not really. The generally accepted breakdowns are:

928: 78-79
928S: 80-83 (ROW) 83-84 (US)
928S2: 84-86 ROW only
928S3: Unofficial name, 85-86 US only
928S4 and on, you’ve already got.

1987-1991 are Series 4 cars, hence the the designation "S4" in 1987. This includes the Club Sport, special Edition, and GT all under the series 4 classification. You can read about this designation in the Porsche Service Info Tech publication for the 1987 model

1987 service info tech
1987 mods, data, settings

All model years

I believe that the S3 designation applies as well to the admittedly few 32 valve cars produced in 1986 (only?) for the ROW.

You’re right. Any 928 with the “pipe organ” 32V engine is an S3, but those ROW models seem so exceedingly rare, since they were emissions specials in Europe and low-octane fuel hedges in Australia, that it adds a little confusion to the otherwise tidy breakdown.

This is mostly correct as you know, but it's worth extending the 928 4.5L base model from 78-82, when it was officially discontinued. When we talk about the endearing OB here it's almost always referring solely to the first two years of production but they were around beyond that.

If one wanted to get extra nerdy..

928 (early VIN): 77
928 ('OB'): 78-79
928: 80-82

The 'OB' middle line could refer to the cars which in the first two years had typically low trim options. No sunroof, single mirror, vinyl upholstery, manual seats, standard transmission..

Thanks Gentlemen:

So what are the Series designations by year? Is "Series" an official designation in 928s?
Even if its not commonly used I'd like to geek out on this one.

I tried to look it up but couldnt find anything in Wikipedia, et al.
Is the below compilation correct?

928 Series 1 - 1978--79

928 S Series 2 - 1980-1983/ROW 1983-1984
928 S2 - 1984-1986 ROW only
928 "S3" - 1985-1986 US only
928 S4 Series 4 - 1987-1989

928 GT Series 5 - 1989-1991
928 GTS Series 6 - 1992-1995

Thanks for the uploads Mark.

There is no such things as series, officially.

But every model can be described precisely, by the model year, market and version.

Of course, they are exceptions
