Default Air pump filter

I discovered that my 1987 S4 is missing both the filter and the cap for the smog pump. Is this critical to replace before running the motor again?
It's my understanding that the pump puts air into the cat when the car is first started to help with emissions, is this correct?

That is my understanding, too. If you are going to keep the smog system system you should replace those two items. I have them leftover from my 87 if you need them.

Thanks Kevin. I'm near Denver CO. What would you be looking for for those items?

My 87 came without the smog pump so I drilled a hole in the cap and the fan assembly and used a zip tie to permanently attach the broken cap.

But Kevin, you can't put your beer there with the zip tie!

Kevin your lid is broken - the tab towards the engine should have the locking nub on it.

There is really no point fitting a filter until you have the lid - it will be bypassed.

New filters are easily available. Because of the way it works - its best to rotate the filter 180 degrees half way through its service life. You'd want to clean it off too - use a vacuum wand to get large debris out from between the filter and shell - then put it down the middle of the filter as you lift it out to get whats trapped at the botttom, and vac the bottom vent again after filter removal - lots of stuff just falls down into the elbow - not the very best of designs...

(Or get rid of the airpump - by the time I took mine out it wasn't even working).

True, but, it is great place to hide some weed when crossing the border from Canada.

how can you tell when the air pump is broken? How do you know when to replace the air pump filter? I noticed the hose connecting to the bottom of the air pump filter is broken and not air tight. Big deal?

I took it out and discovered it didn't pump anymore (whizzing it with an electric drill) - it did make some nasty noises though. I know that doesn't help you.

Two more practical options:
1) You could just see if you get any suction in the elbow at the bottom of the mini filter housing
2) When the car is warmed up you could see if it pumps air out the bypass port that connects to the CAI on the filter box lid (underside port on passenger side (LHD)) - just pull it off - if it flows no air as you rev it - it doesn't work...
