that thing would probably get you killed - looking down at that tiny screen trying to navigate.

i really don't like stereos (especially nav units) placed so low in the center console.

This is very true, however I also hate the look of the dash mounted garmin units and such.

This leaves us with few alternatives.

I have a full double Din unit now, but as others have expressed they dont fit perfectly.

smart phone suction window or vent mount - easily removeable, eye-level, always updated maps.

Personally I dont wanna rely on my cell phone for navigation, its often without service in rual areas.

As far as window or vent mounting handheld units, I just hate the look of them. Especially if there not hard wired in as then you have a cord running down the dash.

I have a garman unit mounted in my Saab and I hard wired it so the cable shows minimumly. For what it is its exceptable, but not something I can live with in my 928.

Just me I guess.

Also on another note, I find my eyes are rarely on the nav unit anyway as I just listen to the voice prompt which is turn by turn directions.

I got excited. And then I see that the Porsche Classic unit has no pre-outs. WTF?

For the period cars it was designed for there weren't any amplifiers

Looks like it only has a subwoofer pre-out.

So the fronts would need a line level converter.

Not a 100% deal breaker but definitely not optimum.

Meh.

Spent an hour this morning looking further. Found this this one with a flip-down screen that looks like it might not totally suck.

Whichever double din you end up going with I would Strongly suggest getting one that the front loads without the face needing to swing/move to open.

The Alpine I have has to move out and drop to load in the CD, so unfortunately it has to stick out further and cannot be flush mounted. This also means that I have to move the shifter back to do so if its in the park position.

Very annoying!

Dave - I do still like the Parrot Asteroid I put in a few years ago. It has a few odd quirks and occasionally pisses me off a little (menu slowdowns) - but overall I like the features, apps are sparse - but I rather expected that (and most head units don't have ANY apps!).

It's quite a good Radio, Media Player (SDCard/USB/iPod/BT/Streaming) and hands free phone system. It has GPS with some light navigation and quite a few location based/aware apps. However I don't use it as my primary navigation device (screen too small/low & capabilities too weak...)

It's also very small (shallow depth), flush face - and can be made to look a bit more "928" - as here:

And it plays the right music too. Right now it's playing my favourite band, but my favourite song is "Born on the bayou", which it wil probably play too I guess...

The **** is truly more of an add-on than a swap. The Parrot unit is completely unmolested underneath - including it's complete control **** assembly still in place.

This whole thing just pulls off - solid friction fit. Only 2 parts involved - the heavily modified blower **** and a simple nylon ring to make the center clicker & illumination work.
