Spent an hour this morning looking further. Found this this one with a flip-down screen that looks like it might not totally suck.

What about this unit, instead: http://www.jensenmobile.com/mobile-m...ia/?sku=VX7010

From the description, I don't think the linked-unit has a flip-down screen. I believe the screen is detachable. It's also motorized, but it appears that just allows the viewing angle to be adjusted. If my interpretation is correct, the unit is a non-starter for me. If I'm just listening to the radio or talking on the phone, I don't want the screen displayed. With this unit, it doesn't appear you can use the radio or phone without the screen attached.

Single DIN. Not too interested in modifying the center console.
I did take a look at that one based upon your recommendation and experience. I don't remember precisely why I didn't go for it, but I dimly recall reading reviews about it hanging-up frequently and I was looking for a unit with more buttons and few multi-function fobs.
<sigh> However, that one is looking better and better.
Absolutely. I'm not interested in blocking the HVAC controls or relocating them. Although, in the long-term that might be what's needed.
I bought a Dual unit a couple of years ago that sat on the shelf until this winter. It has lots of buttons on a flip down 'tray' that exposes the LCD. I like all that. The PROBLEM is that the the final resting place of the tray cannot be changed. When the unit is mounted at an angle - as in the 928's center console - the buttons are unusable.
That's the last time I buy a HU without reading every damn page of the manual.
Last, I haven't read the manual on the unit I posted above yet. So, can't say what's what.

i remember in my old 928 i had a minidisc changer in the glovebox with a Clarion AutoPC.
if you have an ipod and can do without CD's, the Alpine iDAxxx units are nice ... shallow with no flip-out. hide the ipod on the parcel shelf, and its charged and controlled by the headunit.

Alpine doesn't make the iDA units anymore. New units have a crappier display. iDA units are still available. Unclear if they are iPhone 5 compatible or if firmware updates are being made available. Anyone know?
I refreshed my memory on the Parrot: there are a lot of very disturbing reviews on Amazon. That's what scared me off last time and I'm re-scared of it now.
Single-DIN units seem to be getting fewer and crappier.

This has not really been my experience. It sometimes bogs down and takes a while to become responsive to controls - have not had it crash at all. Some control combinations seems to stop responding in certain modes but others still wake it back up. It is slow to startup every time as it need to boot-up. Quirky and not quite "finished for prime time" is a very fair comment, but I can live with that.
I have not experienced the HW issue of it cutting out over bumps etc - that sounds mostly like a poor installation issue to me. Any power loss will cause a device like this to reboot.
Many bemoan that it doesn't support Android Marketplace/Google Play and that App support is weak, and about the ancient version of Android it runs on. Parrot didn't promote it as Android compatible for general purpose apps so I think thats an unfair expectation. It has actually accumulated more apps over time (slowly) - mainly location based services (as makes sense).
It has GPS built-in but navigation is not a strong point for this product - it was again not billed as a navigation device - however it was a reasonable expectation that this would be pursued and improved on over time.
The small screen and install location in a 928 make this a non-optimal platform anyway to me... I had a Blaupunkt nav system before in the same location - similar sized screen - it was not comfortable for general use so I didn't expect to use the Asteroid this way, (I just take my screen mounted Tom Tom when I need this). It actually makes a good companion device for this usage
There is a sense it was abandoned and obsolete - actually there have been several new firmware releases over just the last year (currenly on 2.1.1) which support the new Asteroid Marketplace app store, and some improvements.
Seems it's no longer available from Parrot - the focus now is on new Asteroid range members (3 new ones).
I think the product suffered from unreasonable & misplaced customer expectations, a lauch that was too early for product readiness, some design issues & ongoing poor support.
I do think its acceptable now - not ideal but still interesting features. There are few systems out there that are really anywhere near perfect.
