Default What's it worth?

I said I would never sell her but I might be selling her. I have had unsolicited offers which im planning to act on. I am just nervous about the price. I have a very very very nice 79 in a rare color. 5 speed. 98k miles. All records. Timing belt just done and clutch. Everything works perfectly down to the AC. Some serious mods done by PO. I used the Hagerty valuation tool to come up with a price. I think that is an accurate tool. What I'm not sure about is the value of the mods. They are listed in my sig, below. Trust me my car is a 9 on inside and out. I drive it though. Not as DD but joy only. So are the mods worthless when selling? I'm not looking for a debate, I just want some honest opinions on fair value of a rare and mint car. Interior is flawless, exterior is flawless. Operating condition is flawless. I have original steering wheel and radio too. The buyer is here on Rennlist so I have been resisting the urge to do a price check publically but I really need third party valuation opinions to feel comfortable with my selling price. I think its fair but I want to be sure I'm not just giving her away either.

I would add $2K for the upgrades and not care if it sells or not.

You have a fantastic car.

I'll take those wheels if you want to sell separate.. could help to make you some more $$.

I don't have an input on the value as it is too old for me to know fully what it is worth... looks beautiful though! Best of luck in whatever you decide.

Cheers,
Bryan

What qualifies as a condition 1? I used condition 2 only because my car is not bone stock not below 10k miles. Am I being fair to my car?

I love the clean look of the '78-'79 OB's. And no sunroof or rub strips! Based on Hagerty's valuation, an average '79 is worth $7983. A condition 2 car, such as your's, is valued upwards to $12,900 and rising in value. I am in no way an expert but I think if you were in the $12,000 range you'd be doing all right. You have a great car! GLWTS!

With out looking at the Hagerty chart I was thinking in the $11-$13k range and going to go up over time. The mods are only worth what someone wants to pay for them, some are going to want originality and some like tasteful mods. Like I have always said, there's an *** for every seat, you just need to find that ***.

The early cars, together and working examples that is, are getting rare. As in one or two available a year. I mean true, well kept, original cars.

When that starts to take hold, the values can be all Over the place.

I missed out on this one yesterday: 1978 Porsche 928 euro southjersey.craigslist.org. The ad is already down but it was a Euro, dark metallic red, 5 spd with supposedly 55k original miles for.....$2000.00! I contacted him repeatedly by email and text 9 hours after he posted the ad. Already sold. However it did look like a repaint (painted over bumper beading) and someone added the chin spoiler and rear spoiler (Competition package- a common upgrade to the grey market cars.) But damn I wanted it for that price! Anyone here pick this one up???

I have been looking for nice OB's for about a year and have bought two of them. your car, even at 15 would a steal. In my opinion the mods add to the car and do not detract from the value. I would add a premium for the mods and offer to remove them if someone balks - those wheels are very nice, rare, and would go for over 1.5k with the tires. Most cars I've seen need at least 5-6 mechanical work, 3-5 k paint, and 5-6 interior to start. And your car is still nicer and more original, which in my eyes is worth more than a redo. If I didn't already have two cars that need work I would be PM'ing you begging you to sell...(still debating doing so in my head and getting rid of my cars as it would be a lot less "hassle factor" straitening out these things)...good luck, but if I were you I would keep it - they are on the rise!

Joel I spoke to the owner and he said the car has been repainted,
original color was Iris Blau,
The new paint was peeling off the roof and the hood,
it had a black interior with the front spoiler added.
otherwise it sounded like a nice car for the price

Thanks for the info, Stan. Now I don't feel so bad that I missed getting it. After all you can't own them all, right? Hope to see you again soon. We really need to do a spring GTG for the Philly shark owners. Our numbers seem to be rising!

What makes you guys say these cars are on the rise? I only see a small price increase annually over a long time. Did I miss a change in the long term valuation trend?

Historically they (928's) continue to be the biggest "steal" in the automotive world (that I'm aware of).

Hagerty has a valuation tool that tracks sales plus we all monitor the market. Over the last year classic car sales have spiked. I just upped my insurance valuation by 30%.

I would think if you put it up for general sale or worldwide sale this car would bring top dollar if you are patient, especially with interest from overseas (Even for US cars). There is a general consensus that nice, original cars (Albeit with reversible mods) with no needs, with full records, all recent services performed, etc. etc. will bring the most. Especially the earliest (OB's in general, 78's more so, early VIN's likely even more) and the latest (GT/GTS) models.

Take a look at Haggerty again - notice that "uptick" from Jan to April this year? 911 cars exploded last year, 928 looks like it's starting as well..Cars like yours rarely come up for sale..I really wish I knew about your car even a few months ago.. When is the last time you saw a '78 like yours in a desirable color/interior with absolutely no needs or stories for sale? Every car I've seen over the past year needs a TON of $$ and work to even come close to what you have. Lucky buyer. If you really are going to sell I would put a serious ad on Rennlist and ask for "offers over such and such" $ will be considered..I may even find a way to jump in, and I'm sure that there are quite a few out there looking for something like what you have- if you are patient the serious folks will come out of the woodwork....
