car dies when driving
Ok i finally got the car up and running. she is purring beautifully, but i have had the car die twice today when driving. the first time she started right back up. the second time she had to sit for a bit before she fired.
the car just looses all power, like I unhooked the battery. Yes i checked for loose terminal connections.

it doesnt cut out like its starved for fuel.
Ignition switch seems logical. Its dies like someone turned the car off. Is there any test for the switch?

I also noticed that it is stumbling a bit still off throttle. So I suppose it could still be vac/ISV related. both times it died was off throttle. 1 heavy 1 light throttle in the neighborhood.

On the way to sharktoberfest a few years ago while going under an overpass I turned on the lights ( '81) and the car died. I was leading my friends (in my 2 other cars) and as I began to pull off (under the overpass) they began to pull over also. I thought 'oh sh-t' now there are going to be 3 cars stuck here (traffic was very congested) Luckily I turned off the lights, and car started up before stopping, pulled back onto road, and made rest of trip with no problems. Never did find the problem, and it has not occured since.

Make sure idle set switch set right for hesitation and possible stall. Crank sensors do all kind of crazy stuff also . never had ign switch go bad but hear about it all the time.

Last night I went through everything again. Checked all connections. Inspected and Deoxed the 13 pin. Even let the car run and bounced it and shook it and tapped relays and shook wires trying to find a loose connection and nothing. the car just sat and laughed at me idling beautifully.
Then to clinch its mocking me I drove it for 2 miles and don't you know that damn thing cut out again. I put her in neutral and she fired right back up while coasting.
Here is what I observed when she died. The gas gauge was bouncing then dropped to 0. I hit a small bump and it bounced back to its level position then the car just quietly cut off.
Could the sending unit send a dead short and shut the car off?

Plenty of ideas to check out - here is one more. I think a failed or damaged LH unit will exhibit the same symptoms - runs a while then shuts off when it warms up - then easy re-start. Louis Ott can test yours and repair it if needed.

RandyV went through this and the solution was LH computer replacement.

I made two tools to help diagnose problems like this. one is a "spark light" I attach to the sparkplug lead and its long enough to run into cab and it pulses as long as the plug is firing. the second is a fuel pressure gage also on a long whip. I attach both of these and drive car. what this does is point me in the right direction most of the time. it could be something as easy as the coil heating up. there are only three things that will cause a engine not to shut off like yours is doing...no fuel, no spark or no air.
