Default Replacement of original cassette stereo system in my 1985 928S

Does anyone have any instructions or pics on how to remove the original radio cassette player from Blaupunkt in a 1985 Porsche 928S. I don't think I will install and extra amplifier in it for now, I will just replace my head unit with a Pioneer CD unit which I already have. I need help with wires also, colors and what they are for. Do I also need to remove the center console ?

I have already done some research and found nothing specific yet. I will also search in Google for other possible sites which would explain how to proceed. So many documented instructions on this site, I'm sure someone has already documented it, but I have yet to find it.

Thank you ahead of time.
Yes I am very new to the Shark and want to do a lot of the repairs if required myself.

It's been awhile IIRC you need the two "U" like removal tools, they insert in the 4 holes on both sides (two/side). This unlocks the Radio from the mounting cage and it pulls out.

Before doing this Removed the Console side covers held in place by Screws, depending on what's been worked on you may need to remove the Parcel shelves or at least the "L" brackets.

Beware that the Stock radio is wired into an Amp located next to the Right side front seat (between seat and door).
This will need to be disconnected and the speaker wires jumped as newer Head units will FRY it, there output on their own is greater than the stock Amps output and will over drive the input stage.

The wiring can be somewhat confusing as it also goes to a front-rear Fader located on the Left side between left seat and door in front of the Hand Brake.

I would suggest just disconnecting all the stock wiring from head unit and Amp and leaving the wiring in place. Run fresh wires to your speakers, that way you can always go back to stock and it will be a cleaner (Audio) setup, and easer too

Couple of pics.

Here is the 1987 wiring color 2-letter codes, I ASSume it works for 1985 as well (?)

BL Blue
BR Brown
GE Yellow
GN Green
GR Grey
LI Violet
RT Red
SW Black
WS White

First is the whole wiring sheet for '85 Radios

NOTE: For some reason RL has 'idiotproofed' large images, so if you right click on the pics below and select 'open image in new tab', you'll get the full size image. (Or just click the pic if you're on one of those toys on which right clicking is too complicated.)

Then the HU pinout and the speakers layout:

You can cut a single metal coat hanger to make the two U shaped removal tools needed for the original deck. Works like a charm; tool only needs to be 4inches long or so. Can't beat the cost.

Thank you all for the information. I will add to the stuff I have found already. At least I will be prepared before working on my 928.

You will then find that 30 year old speakers sound like.......well 30 year old speakers at best...

Rod's diagram for the 87 doesn't match my 85.

Do you have a copy of the WSM yet? There's a link to free downloads in the "New Visitor" sticky. Roger sells the Moorhouse CD-ROM that has the entire WSM, tech bulletins and a whole lot more for $75. Well worth the money.

If you plan on doing your own work, you need them.
You really can't work on these cars without the books.

I did the stereo in mine (was completely gone).
I found:

Constant power - Solid red, comes off fuse 24, the interior light circuit.
Switched power - Red/white stripe. Fused line off the ignition switch.
Antenna amp - Black. Runs alongside the antenna coax. You can power this with an amp "remote turn on" or power antenna wire.
Lighting - Blue/Black. Same as the lights to the instrument panel.
Ground - Brown. Brown is always ground in these cars.

Hope this helps.

I think there's some wisdom to what James said.

If I were in your shoes, I would contact Hans and see if speaker replacement is good enough to satisfy you. You have such a nice car, it would be ashame to modify if not needed!

Just my 2 cents...

I am the third owner of this vehicle and as per the 21 year owner which I bought the car from, he did somehow mention that the speakers had been changed, but with all the excitement of purchasing my dream car, I might have imagined that !

Yes Wisconsin Joe, I did download the manuals, but I am no mechanic at best, but I will definitely do what I can. Thank you for the wiring information.

This is how my 85 and 86.5 is too.
The Antenna Amp wire also runs to the stock Power Amp and acts as the "switch" to turn on the Power Amp, it can be used for an after market Power amp switch too.
The Solid Red (always on) is the main power for the Power Amp and also keeps the Head unit memory settings.

I still would advise you to do it as I stated in my last post, you will be happier in the end.

The wiring diagram is from the '85 wiring diagrams- the color code convention is from 1987, it's the earliest one I had on hand. So I think the diagram should be correct for your '85, Euro or U.S.

Ok. The more you read them, the more you will understand them. It's a learning process. The folks on here are pretty good at helping the "less experienced" learn. Start with little tasks. Work your way up to bigger. Soon, you too, will be giving advice to the "new guy." That's when you really find out how much you do and don't know.

Oops. You're right. The colors weren't right and that threw me off.

Duh.

A lot of good advice here which I wont repeat. Just another problem that fits in with radio projects on thirty year old cars; the wring in the doors is prone to breaking. You may have to replace the wires leading from the speaker package to the radio. My drivers door wiring failed; the passenger door wires are still ok probably because that door is not opened and closed as much
