Radio Removal/Installation: Can it really be this easy?
Finishing up some audio work (speakers/amp) and was reviewing the instructions for the replacement radio. Yeah, I know. I'm weak, I read the instructions!!!
It appears that Crutchfield provides a tool to remove the radio without removing the center console. I have the original blaupunkt stock unit in a 1988S4 and wish to remove it. The unit appears to have the holes that line up for the the tool to work. Can the Crutchfield tool be used to remove the existing radio?
I've been holding off on finishing this project because I did not want to remove the console if I didn't have to. Thanks in advance for your guidance.

The radio should come out easily, using the tool. If you need another, you can bend a section of wire coathanger and round the tips...
The side panels come off of the console pretty easily, and will give you additional access to the wiring behind the radio. There are two or three Phillips screws to remove, then the panel slides back and down.
Don't forget that the antenna amp must be powered from the radio. There should be a blue wire that usually powers a retractable antenna - you need to hook it to the small black wire that is molded to the antenna co-ax.

removal of the side console covers is the best way to replace the radio It gives you plenty of room and will let the wire harness be routed without pinching also check the power to the cig lighter with the battery disconnected of course you want to check the routing of the wires for the clock as well make sure all of the connections are tight and that the bottom of the cig lighter is clear from other parts so nothing gets melted if its used.
I was testing my cig lighter in the Euro while taking a drive (and it turns out it was a new lighter and had some kind grease on it)
Anyway smoke starts pouring out of the console about 10 seconds after pushing it in ... After pulling the lighter out the smoke stopped a little bit of brake cleaner cleaned the end of the lighter

I put a new stereo in my car and proptly burnt up my stock amp. I had to rewire my entire stereo to bypass my stock amp (no big deal) Everything works great now. PM me for questions. I would remove the side panels for ease of installation.

I used bent welding wire pushed into the 4 holes of the stock Blaupunkt then pried it out easily.
My problem is that the wire colors do not match the wire diagram for the 1988 Porsche 928.

I removed my whole center console and labeled every wire when i did my double din install. Don't do that unless you have time and beer.
