Interior Modification Concepts
So I have an '80 928 in (badly re-done) Guards Red. It was my graduation present for surviving high school, and when I'm home from college this summer, I'm thinking about painting it and redoing the interior. As far as condition goes, the paint is adequate in some places (but obviously a job that only received one or two coats) and pretty terrible in others, and the interior is black vinyl (not original). The driver's floor mat is not the one that belongs in the car, and there's just bare metal beneath it, most of the center console instrumentation is missing, about the only things that are decent in the interior are the dash and the pod. Seats aren't awful, but 35 years....
So, any suggestions, warnings, etc. about interior stuff? I'm not sure about paint colors either, haven't really decided on anything yet. Been working on a bit of an interior sketch, I'll post that later. Thanks!

The obvious warning is - it gets expensive real fast for parts - so as much as possible plan to repair what you have - surprising what you can bring back.
Color change is not so hard to do yourself on leather. For the interior color scheme Nicole will tell you to keep it simple to 2 or maybe 3 colors (one being an accent) the others complimentary.
Functionally you are far better off leaving everything ~stock

Well, as far as parts go I have most of a '79 Euro still lying around, and (heretical as it is) I'm thinking about doing something completely different with the interior, changing the center console into something more elongated and prominent. I recovered the door panels this past summer with new vinyl, which wasn't terribly difficult (I was admittedly surprised. We also reinforced the panels with a tight-weave fiberglass/epoxy that added some great structural integrity and made them feel a lot more solid). In terms of interior colors I was thinking about a color similar to this brown, which I quite like, if I can find the leather for it. Bit of a strange color.
And as for functionality, there's nothing really there to function except some aftermarket gauges, the gear shift, and the window switches.

Yes I heard what you said on what's missing - but I'd still leave it stock (e.g. find the stock parts you need).
Understand that if you change the console you will likely make the car very difficult to sell (e.g. you will get much less $$ for it) - unless you do some crazy amazing job - which of course everyone thinks they will do (but nobody has ever pulled off yet... even with quite big money invested...)
The best results seem to have come from just quite subtle modifications to the existing console...
Another warning - Browns are not typically the favorite colours of 928 buyers, so you should still do what you like but do consider the consquences there too....
Do a mock up in Photoshop so you can get some ideas of what it will look like finished and maybe keep the stock console and get a trashed one to modify?

otherwise, this is probably the worst car you could choose as a college student.
it will devour time and money like you wouldn't believe, neither of which any good college student should have.

Not a surgeon, corporate attorney, but same income bracket. And yes, I do get good grades. 3 A's and 3 B's last semester, 4 A's and 2 B's this semester (at least so far).

There's a very good reason the original interior concept held up the entire production run of 18 years.
It is your 928 however, do what makes you happy.
