Anyone out near Chandler AZ?
I am checking to see if we happen to have any active 'listers here in the Chandler, Arizona area. If so, I could use a hand with something towards the end of April.
In a very bizarre and fortuitous set of events, it looks like I will be adopting a Canadian 87 S4.
On our way back from Third Coast in November, we saw a 928 in distress on the other side of the highway. We ran up to the next exit and doubled back, figuring it was someone else headed home from Texas. It turned out to be two retirees from Canada who winter every year in Chandler, AZ. After going through all the normal tests, we quickly determined that it was a bad LH. I happened to have a spare, so popped it in, and it came back to life. I gave him my card, and told him to let us know when he got to Chandler safely, and that I would send him contact information on where to get his LH rebuilt, and he could just mail me back my LH whenever he received the rebuild.
We got an email a couple days later that he made it safely without further issue.
A couple days after that, I got a call and he decided that it was probably time to retire his well traveled 928, and asked if I would be interested in taking "delivery" of my LH installed in his 87. Naturally I was quite pleased, and he said he would get in touch about a month before they were going to fly back to Canada.
Fast forward another 4 months, and I received that call today. They are planning on flying out the week of April 23, and will officially retire their car that week.
Its about 1700miles from Chandler to Indianapolis, and its a Canadian car, so will probably opt to ship it until I can get all the paperwork together. It may be beneficial to have a local contact there to help with the shipping, especially if I can't find a carrier to pick it up the day or so before they leave.
If we have anyone that can either volunteer to help if necessary, or can recommend a shop that would store the car on their lot for a day or two for a reasonable price, that could be very helpful.
Thanks!
Hans

Hans, I think you'll have a number of people in the Chandler (east Phoenix) area that would be willing to help (me included) if needed. There's also Rich Andrade, Alan, Dan (S4ordie) and more towards that end of town.
You could also contact our local 928 guru, Dan Warner, Exotic Motorwerks and he may be able to help with storing the car for a few days. I also have space at the house to store the car as well.

Finally, a good deed going unpunished. Nice going, Hans.
I made a new contact recently in Litchfield Park, a few miles from Chandler. I can PM you his contact information if you like.
Also You might get ahold of Rich Andrade in Mesa. He helped me a year or so ago with taking delivery of my 80 Euro and held it for a few days until I could get there and load it to haul home myself. He is also a good one to rebuild the LH for you. Try him at:
info@electronikrepair.com
Alan is down there too, so there ought to be some help for you. The 928 Desert Rats are a pretty tight group, and very willing to help out.
Good Luck.

Hans - As others have said, there are several Rennlist members in the area. Rich Andrade is the president of the Arizona chapter of the 928 owners club (and the person I blame for giving me the comfort to make my own purchase late last year). Dan Warner is a great mechanic. His shop is in north Scottsdale. He might be better equipped to help with loading the car during business hours, but getting the car to his shop wouldn't be as easy as getting the car to somewhere in Mesa. Maybe the soon-to-be prior owners will drop it off there on their way out of town?
I cannot volunteer to assist. I'm a tax CPA and I'll be busy digging myself out from under all the non-tax return work that's been accumulating while we're getting returns out the door. I just cannot promise I'll be available.

How about this idea, Hans:
You can fast foreward again about 3 and a half months and then have one of the AZ guys ferry the car up here when they come for the 928 Function at the Junction, July 3 to 6. I'll bet one of them will store it for you until then. Then you can hitch a ride out here with one of the guys coming from the midwest and then you can take part in the Function. Then you can just drive it home when the event is over.
Just a thought.

Thanks guys.
The fun challenge is trying to get it registered. Since it was driven across by a citizen for personal use, it wasn't "imported." You would think it would be as easy as paying the 2.5% tax and getting the bill of sale and title... but I keep hearing it needs to go back to CA and be imported.
Looking for a loophole. Got to love a challenge.
Thanks

Hans I can probably help you out if needed - I'll send you some contact details. I won't be able to store it here, but I'd expect Dan Warner at Exotic Motorwerks could do that for you and could perhaps check it over for you too - he is a very good 928 mechanic and also very trustworthy. Pretty much all of us here in the Phoenix area use him, he may even know of the car...

Hans,
Fly to AZ in July, pick up the car from whoever will store it, drive it safely and within the law to Kananaskis Canada for 928 OCIC. Then you can 'import' it back into the USA yourself!!!
Probably not as simple as I made it sound - HA.
Congrats on a new member of the herd.
