Default Question regarding engine removal and room for HF hoist near front bumper..

I own a HF engine hoist. I plan on pulling the motor on my 928 here in the next month or so and want to prepare accordingly.

My question is that I'm concerned that the lift when attempting to reach over the motor will run out of length and the lift itself will hit the bumper before I get in far enough.

I've searched and what I have found hasn't been clear enough that it will work. Some people have said yes then I see that their front bumper if completely off the car. Others have said yes but that's all the detail they provide.

Any help is appreciated and pictures are always welcomed.

Thanks,
Bryan

1 or 2 ton HF crane? Either I guess should be OK, two points, remove the radiator, and crane arm has been stuck out crazy amounts without trouble.

The crank style load levelers is handy, allows adjusting angle while lifting.
Removing the hood makes it easier as well.

Set the boom arm on the 1/2 ton (longest) setting. It'll clear the front bumper just fine. Agree with Mike RE: the leveler, makes life easier.

Can't imagine being able to pull an engine without having to remove the hood first, once the bellhousing is unbolted and slid back from the engine, you have to lift about 3 inches straight up (to clear the motor mounts) before you can move the engine forward in the engine bay.

There are some good threads with step-by-step lists for engine removal. I like this one:

Thanks very much. I remembered when I was using my crane/lift for another car a year ago or so. It seems shorter in the front than my 928 but was almost hitting the bumper on the front. When I started looking at the 928 it made me worry as it's seems very long.

I also wouldn't feel comfortable extending the boom in a homemade fashion like I seen when searching. How much does the motor weigh once you are removing and some of the ancillary stuff has been removed?

I do have a leveler already so it should make the job easier but the Porsche engine shop tool which I noticed in my WSM's would be nice as well.

There are occasions where the weight of the motor has pulled the hoist into the car when jacking it up. If i recall correctly it's the jack bottle that contacts the bumper cover. It's not contact with any amount of force, just have some cardboard handy to slide in between to keep the contact from scuffing the paint. Have it nearby, my recollection is when it happens, you don't have much time to react.

The HF hoist works fine, like Rob says. Do yank the hood and rad. Make sure all of the bolts are in the hoist fittings. I didn't pull much off the one I took out and then weight was not a problem for the hoist. The leveler came in handy but we didn't use any special tools (but don't let me discourage you from getting more tools - new tools always good). Its heavy but not scary heavy.

Complete S4 motor is something on the order of 530 lbs, no problem for the hoist. The hoist can have a mind of its own with the load of the engine on it, good idea to have a piece of cardboard protecting the front bumper.

Thanks,

I do plan on taking out Rad and the hood will come off for sure. I need to replace the pad under the hood so would like to do it right with it upside down, proper cleaning, etc.

Working on my 993TT right now and then I will tackle the 928.

Take the license plate bracket off if you have one on.

I ended up making a new extention bar. Might work with the stock one, but much easier with a longer reach. Plus more height range.

It's not that bad a job to do. I do want to kill the guy that decided the upper bellhousing bolts were located properly.
There are two ways to get them out. Greg Nettles (RIP) would get at them from below with a 4' wobble end extension bar on a ratchet. Others use the indexing ratchet wrenches. See post #4 in https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ing-bolts.html

I bought a set but haven't used them yet.

I've found after unbolting the bell, lifting the bell w/ a small jack helps the centering pins in the rear of the block clear the bell housing for eng removal, do the same when installing.
