87 Center Vent - Illuminated Defrost symbol
Has anyone seen this before. Was it actually illuminated?

Roger,
My 1980 model had a fiberoptic strand that was connected there, and yes it was illuminated. It looked "original" and the fiberoptic strand originated from the HVAC module. Not sure if it was a very neat modification by the previous owner or if it actually came from the factory that way.
Cheers!

No thats not what the lever is for! The lever is just for closing off the center vent which you might want to do to varying extents for various reasons.
However when you are in front defogger mode - it doesn't work very we'll if the center vent is open - So I'd assume its intended as a reminder to close this vent for effective defog & defrost operation. Now you'd also have to close both door vents for the most effective results but those ducts are long enough that most flow would still go to the defog/defrost vents as long as the center vent is closed.
On 1982 & 1983 cars the vent was automatically controlled via a 2 level vacuum actuators - these years had the very best automatic defog modes...

Maybe center vent for cars "without" automatic AC (no internal or external sensors) do show the symbol. Different part numbers --- 928 573 045 02 (leatherette) and 928 573 045 50 (Leather).
I will order one up to check the theory.

Roger,
I have two different center vents, one from a "without automatic AC" in leather pattern which has the symbol, and a "with automatic AC" in non-leather pattern (smooth) which does not have the symbol.
Cheers!
