It would be interesting if they did some more tests with some of the even cheaper Dino oils from the same manufacturers available here in AUS (If you hadn't realised Street Commodores is an Australian publication)

Also, Mobil-1 in the USA in 0W40 weight doesn't have the same ZDDP as Mobil1 15W50 which is the stuff you guys get at walmart (which has around 1200ppm ZDDP from memory).
Having said which - the ones which test well are funnily enough, the brands who do have good ZDDP in their higher weight oils. I use Penrite (they publish Zinc/Phosphorous content for each of their oils publicly), and Valvoline also make the 20W50 recommended by the local 928-specialist (factory trained) mechanic.
I do like the test methodology in that article however - I think any US-based magazine who performed a similar test in a broad range of weights would get a lot of attention and love from pretty much all car enthusiast forums. (e.g. run the test for 0W30, 10W40, and 20W50 classes of oils).

Read it a few years ago , the inexpensive Valvoline 10w-40 durablend did very well for itself , got to love the ZDDP , it keeps the metal bits away from each other
The Royal Purple Racing 51 ( 20w-50 ) , now called Royal Purple XPR 20w-50 is one of the best if not the best in regards to oil film strength , fantastic last century Porsche track oil , but then again its a 20w-50 with lots of ZDDP, so no surprises there at all

Speaking of synthetics, I work for Shell and saw a product launch last week for a new Pennzoil(Shell owns Pennzoil) synthetic made from a crystal clear base oil that comes from our GTL (gas to liquids) plant in Qatar. So this is oil made from natural gas. Looks like it will be 5-30 weight. I don't know if it has much zinc or is good for our older engines, but just FYI that it's coming. You will be seeing a huge media blitz soon.
Here's some more details
Specs
And a dedicated Bob the oil guy thread on the oil in which Shell is participating.

Whether or not that oil is the right oil for us, the gas to liquid oils are exactly what they are supposed to be. From what I hear, the ability to control the exact composition of the gas to liquid synthetic motor oil is nothing short of incredible. Just hearsay, you may want to confirm or contradict this with your more reliable info.
