My coin holder came with a "lucky" quarter from the PO. He said that same quarter was there from his PO.

I deleted mine when I redid the carpet.

Did I save $64.59?

I have an odd bird- early type (two brackets) in my US '84, I think. PN is 928.555.337.02... (So far, found two on eBay, one $75, the other $89...)

But, quite unfortunately for the one I have, a PO did a sloppy glue job on both the first and last slots such that they are not budging. (At least, not yet!)

Most people have items missing from their tool kit when they buy their 928. Mine had all the tools but no coin holder - go figure. Roger fixed that for me.

Neat trivia on the clips.

I am always interested in new challenges, even when I am working on past ones, but I don't quite follow what you are suggesting here. My first problem is that I never had a need for coins to be handy in my cars, probably because I have never lived around where there were toll roads. In fact, when Doug and I redid the interior of my first S4 we eliminated the coin holder completely.

As to eliminating the dime and nickel slots, I can guess that would be because they are no longer needed at toll booths. However, I am not sure about what is meant by "replace with the first two rows." I think that might mean to have three or four slots, but only for quarters and halves. Then too, I have to wonder about the use of halves since they do not seem to be in circulation very much. What about three or four rows of just quarters?

The originals are of course made in a mold with the plastic injected, but I could probably replicate one of these, or something like it, using one of the other processes I work in, such as vacu-forming, and then gluing it together in pieces. I could even make it much deeper so it would hold a lot more coins. I suppose I could also make different versions to use other kinds of coins or even tokens.

Tell me more about what you have in mind.

A replacement drop-in holder for my Honda is under $8 brand new. I'm sure there are other similarly-inexpensive replacements available. Just need some brackets I suspect.

Failure mode for me has a couple of the little corners of the coin slots broken. I don't use it at all, instead change lives in the front of the cassette box.

My change lives in the ashtray, for which I have no use. Probably no use for coins either as the last toll road of which I am aware, in GA, (GA 400) that took coins has been "freed".

MY '78 US #342 has a coin holder with the two metal brackets.
