Default Non Functional Washer 1986.5

I didn't get enough frustration out of my blue hose project ... so I decided to tear into the washer system that has never worked as long as I have owned the car.

I had never heard the washer motor actually run when attempting to activate.
Fuses and relay checked out.

I have learned not to crank on hoses because of the 30 year old plastic nipples, now I cut them off carefully.

Lots of barf in the tank and around.
Surprisingly, the motor worked when I cleaned and jumped it -- could it be that simple? Doubtful.
I will troubleshoot check valves and nozzles next.

More to come.

nice, clean out the tank remove the metal collars in the tank inlet and the fill tube outlet,
they are not needed, note just snug the clamps, on the transfer hose.

The pump you have pictured is for the headlamps, and will only work after the lights have been turned on, and then the washer stalk pushed forwards,

if your tank was filled with rust then there may be rust in the lines,
its best to flush this out so the washers dont spray rusty water onto the paint

Ok. I'm having trouble finding any material on wash system in my WSM.

I did not find a lot on my advanced search here either.

If the headlight motor is the one directly under my tank, is the motor under the intensive wash reservoir the motor to the windshield?
That one is, in fact, non-functional when jumped. That would make more sense.
Thanks.

Your pump for the main washer is located in the engine bay attached to he passenger side wheel well. There is another pump for the intensive fluid under the little tank in the front of the car. The intensive fluid pump is activated by the button under the dash to the right of the steering wheel. Both the intensive lines and the standard fluid lines run together and then travel to the hood. That is if the WW system for a MY 86 is the same as a MY85.

I can't get my standard fluid pump to work, but my intensive pump works fine. For the little amount that I use the washers, that's what I use for now.

Look at your wheel well, near but behind shock/spring, for three rubber ****.
They are the mountings for the washer pump, which mounts to the inner wheel well.

There are a number of threads about washer rehab. Problem is weak search function. You might need to encase words or phrases in quotes strategically to get better results.

Intensive washer motor/pump might be a swap for the actual windshield washer motor/pump.

The carbon steel liner fittings will need to go --- some reline with a Nibco copper pipe nipple; I just run without.

Yep, doubtful. The same stuff you found in the tank is probably evenly distributed through the hoses, valves and nozzles. OTOH, it's not hard, just tedious.

Eventually, a rubber band to hold the lever back and the pump on will be your friend.

Have fun.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction you guys, I do appreciate it.

Ok, I will keep going.
I'm trying to decide if the system was vastly over engineered or simply designed by a sadist.

The intensive wash motor did become functional again after cleaning.
Regards.

As said above, the intensive pump down behind the grille and the window washer pump are the same part and 'swappable'.
The window washer pump is a PITA to change, unless you have the motor out!.
I have had 2 of these fail but they ran when the wiper lever is pulled or jumped with 12v.
The motor drive shaft inside the pump rusts out. They are too cheap to be bothered messing with.

Thanks Ramcram, you could argue that I should have researched system better before I tore into it.
It just won't stop snowing here, so I jumped in on it because I was pacing the garage like a jungle cat.

Got the motor from inside the fender, and it was just as you guys had predicted. Drive shaft was crusted up and gone.
I mapped out the entire washing system...

I did end up swapping the motors.
I essentially disabled the intensive wash system, and used it for the regular wash motor.
I mounted everything outside the fender where God intended it to be....

I had also found some leaky junctions and replaced them along with some new line and other mods up in the hood.

Dave, I need to replace my washer motor as well. I'm planning on moving it to the fender well also. How did you end up running the wiring for the pump?

Hey Art,

I did not have to modify the existing wiring, which was a bonus.
I deleted the rubber grommet in the fender wall (that the existing hoses for the washer go thru), and had enough room to pull the wire with the plug out through that hole.
There was actually a fair amount of room to work with.
Hope it goes well, PM me if there's anything I can help with.
Cheers, Dave.

Ok. That part of the Job is done. I had to remove the air-box on the p/s intake to have enough room to reach in to guide the power connecter through the hole. Still not an easy job at that. Also I had to reach through the hole with scissors and cut the T-connector out so i could remove the old hoses. I was able to reuse the rubber grommet. The new pump now works but there appears to be clogs in the hoses in the hood.
That will have to wait till summer when I remove the hood to put a new hood liner in.
Thanks for the writeup Dave. It was a great Idea. I can't imagine how hard it would have been in the original location.

Thanks Art, you weren't kidding when you said you were going to get on it!
Took me much longer to muck through it.
I had a little extra room on the inside because of the air pump delete.

Seems like anything goes on the hood hoses. I ended up pulling out a ridiculous amount of hose and deleting some check valves.

Have a good weekend, NICE car by the way. Love that Prussian Blue.
