Default Seller canceled UPDATE DEAL WORKED OUT

I was scheduled to fly up to the Bay area to pick up a GTS today
The seller notified me 20 min before I am leaving having a change of heart and not selling….bummed!
I am out $200 for flight fees
Should I be reimbursed?

yes you should... Good luck getting it. If the guy is a "stand up" guy he will reimburse you. If not, then he is not a "stand up" guy and you are probably better off without the deal going through anyway...

Yes.

I'm always discouraged when I come across people like this. Unfortunately, they are out there, and muck around thru life displaying lack of character.

He might have been an anonymous R-lister that was trolling to see what interest was out there for his GTS. He'll probably be asking more for it next week.

Ouch, that really does suck. Honestly, I'd be up front about it with the flight plans and that you would appreciate it if you were reimbursed since they reneged.

If they don't then you'll just have to eat the loss but hopefully they are courteous enough to pay you back for this last minute cancellation.

Be sure to send him a 1099 for your loss next year.

To be fair, selling a GTS could be pretty traumatic.

Good luck with the purchase. Hope it's smooth from here on out.

The thrill of the purchase, the moment you have the keys and it is yours, the drive home.
We are living the dream through you.

Unless he offers, I don't think there is much you can do. Ask nicely for him to split the expense? That might be do-able to him and take some of the sting out for you. Try to keep it friendly as he will probably change his mind in the future and you might want him to call you first when he does.

If he won't do anything now ask that he keep this in mind and knock a couple hundred bucks off when he does sell it to you in a year or so.

My GTS was for sale on and off for a few years and some folks here tried to get a deal going but the seller was not really that motivated or cooperative. A couple of years later he got frustrated and was just done with it. He put it on CL for a killer price. I check for 928s on the local CL a couple of times a day out of habit, and was all over it. Respectful, knowledgeable, cash in hand, etc. So I got a great car for a much better price. The tipping point for him was that it sprung a new oil leak and he took it to the dealer and they said the pan gasket and cam cover gaskets and everything needed to be done again, and quoted him $10k or something. It turned out to be a leaking power steering hose that cost me $120 and a couple of hours. He didn't know anything and the dealer here is just as bad, but I think we all have moments where we feel like we just want it gone. If this is really the car you want your job is to make sure he has your number when he gets to one of those moments again.

Another thought would be to see if he will let you fly on up and have a look at it. You already paid the airfare. And this way when he does decide to sell you will know the car and the seller and can be ready to pull the trigger on a moments notice.

Of course 928s are not like 993s. Finding one to buy is not usually that much of a problem, unless you are looking for a totally smoking deal or a very unusual car. Finding just a great deal and a nice car is not the work of years. Especially in CA. Here in Hawaii, on the other hand, there is only the one GTS in the state.

Meanwhile you have your early car to play with. Only having that one project to focus on for a little while will mean you will get it on on the road and be enjoying it much faster.
