Default El Guapo Zyc car getting the silent treatment

Just wanted to share some pics and products I am using to do some sound deadening on the car. I use Acoustical Surfaces Inc. for products. Great people and great products. No roofing material, just pure aluminized butylene rubber and Vinyl damping material.

The doors are very solid now both on the inside and when you tap on them from the outside. While in the doors check everything you can for looseness, noise, wiring concerns etc. I like to tap all around and sound out noises. Fix everything you can while in the door. Lube all moving parts. Fix door panel issues, I used JB Weld epoxy on broken panels and also re-glued all loose door panel carpet and leather especially along the top of the door frame.

Areas done:
* Back deck trunk and under Sharkwoofer
* Floor boards
* Doors, main area of concentration

Products:
V-Max
VB2

Removed door panels and cleaned the surfaces. Installed V-Max on inner part of outside door skin and on inner part of door (door panel side). I then used VB2 to close up the open areas that the existing plastic cover did. VB2 is cut to shape then heated with a heat gun to form and stick to the surface. Do not remove all the protective paper from the backside, just cut ~1 inch strips from the edges of the VB2 enough for it to stick and the exposed open area does not have sticky material to the backside.

Please let me know if you have any questions and good luck. This project yields big returns not only on noise control, but also in finding items needing correcting that you may not have been aware of.

Very nice, pretty and obviously cvareful and well thought out. Please update the thread as you continue with the rest of the car. This will be on the lsit of winter projects as soon as I get to a place that has 'winter'.

Neighbor shared pics of a couple feet of fresh powder at the new place we are building. Nothing says 'winter' quite like fresh powder.

Roughly what is this going to cost to do the whole car? I am going to be doing this when I replace carpet, since everything will be out of the car anyways. Do you know roughly how much weight this adds as well?

Hi Brighton,
Depends how much you plan to do. The areas that are the biggest bang for the buck are usually the doors, roof, trunk, then floors. It is really difficult to do the firewall, but that makes a big difference also. As I only have done the trunk area, doors and floors I ordered 12 sheets (3 sq. ft ea) for a total of 36 sq. ft. 1 sheet of VB2 (37" x 54"). Total with shipping was under $200.

If everything will be out of your car, I would double the V-Max to 72 sq.ft. I would estimate the weight added would be ~15 to 20lbs. Remember that the old insulation on the outer door skins is probably falling off and needs to be removed and area cleaned well. This is probably around 3lbs of old asphalt material.

Good luck.

boomboom, very nice! Better looking than what the pros did on the Turquoise Metallic stroker.

A question others may answer if not you, what about the plastic vapor barrier? There have been a couple of threads about its significance. One person did an excellent thread using shower curtain material. I don't have time to search for these threads at the moment.

Hey Dan,
Looked into that a while back and as long as the door is sealed it should be fine. I have used the VB2 to seal doors completely in the past instead of the plastic vapor barrier. Most new car manufacturers use something like VB2 now. Chose to really quiet things down and use the V-Max for all except the openings that the VB2 works best at.

Really huge difference in how the door shuts now. Really tight. Here are a couple more pics of the rewiring for the speakers and crossover. All speaker wires are tinned and soldered to female spades.

Hope you trip went well.

PS Remember I said Laura switches the letters around on my name and what you get?

Did mine as well have not got to the doors and floors yet but the difference was amazing and the sound quality of stereo blew me away. I used ballistic which was very similar. here are a few pics as well.

I would be interested in seeing what sort of Decibel reduction is achieved. Have you taken "before" measurements?

I did some measurements when I did this several years ago. Here is one thread:

Sorry I have not taken measurements. The car is new in my garage and has been going thru some work. I have not driven it much and decided to do this work since it has been very successful on other Porsches I have owned.

I can say the overall feeling when driving is of less rumble and more quietness. You can hear music much more clearly and all the wonderful engine sounds. It just sounds and feels much tighter.
