Default The battery clamp doesn't seem to fit.

Is the part at the bottom of the image the correct battery hold down clamp for my car?

When I set it over the bolt hole on the left side of the image I can't get the door to close.

Thanks.

My car has one of those too, but I've never used it. I've got an opitma.

Try it without the battery in place. If it fits your battery is the wrong size. The battery looks kinda long to me.

Heh heh heh...

It sounds like you're trying to fit the clamp incorrectly. The clamp is not fitted horizontally, as if to hold the top of the battery down. That would be rather weak, wouldn't it?

The clamp fits vertically, the through-bolted part is at the top and the rest points downward. The bottom edge of the clamp rests on the battery's bottom edge. If the battery does not have a lip at the bottom for the clamp to sit on, the clamp will not work. The concave side of the clamp is toward the battery.

At the bottom of the battery bucket, at its forward edge, is a built-in clamp for the forward lower lip of the battery. Make sure the forward lower lip of the battery is under the built-in clamp, then clamp down the rear. You should not be able to move the battery when it's done correctly.

I'm assuming your car is like mine and that my memory is reasonably sound.

Oh, and occasionally check that the clamp is tight if you engage in vigorous driving.

Curt,
Thanks for your help!

Does anyone know the correct size of the bolt?
Jim

I agree your battery looks long. Yesterday I replaced the battery in my '87 S4 with an Interstate MT-47 ($80). Dimensions on the Interstate = (L - 9.63") (W - 6.88") (H - 7"), and it's actually just a tiny bit smaller than the Porsche battery that came out.

The description of how the clamp works is exactly right.

Could someone go over the mounting again? It's not mapping to my battery box features.

I got dinged at my last tech inspection for not having it tied down. I tried to fabricate one, but the inspector didn't like that either. Did get it approved at the track.

Early cars have bigger batteries. I found this out when I bought the '86.5 which has a smaller battery and battery box than my '86.
