Default Exclusive program door card inserts - construction details?

I'm interested in replicating the combination leather-wood door card inserts that were available thru the Exclusive Program.

I have pictures of the outside surface of some examples, and have been able to estimate the component dimensions, but do not know how they are constructed or the thickness of the components. Is there a single backing with a wood and upholstered panel mounted on it, or is the upholstered panel mounted over a section of the wood? I assume that the wood is a veneer over ply? How is the edge finished?

I'd appreciate any details others can provide. Thanks.

The wood veneer section is being refurbished for the set that I have so I can't take pictures. I have the leather piece and it is made up of a very thin (like paper) leather over foam over wood.

Martin,

I have the only 1994 GTS that came into the US with these wood/leather door inserts. I will try to remove one, and take pictures for you within the next few days. In order to get you the pix, I'll need your e-mail address. You can send it to me via an e-mail to me through Rennlist.

+1, Gary, I would be more than happy to host and post them here for posterity, if you're ok with that. I would love to see how these are constructed. My e-mail is roberte01 at gmail.com

Many thanks for the pics Roger - that makes it very clear how those panels are made and attached to the veneered piece. Easy to make, and easy to improve on.

@Gary: More pics, specially of the veneered piece and backer would be great. My email is martinss at rogers dot com.

Martin,
I will eventually remove the leather and foam and will make some templates.

Where does the threaded fastener go? The conventional insert is held against the door by a spring steel clip so seeing a fastener on the back of this type is interesting ...

Tom it connects to the larger wood veneered piece which in turn locates in the car the conventional way

Didn't know that ... so what you showed is a cover sitting atop the wood piece ... really looking forward to seeing Gary's pics now!

Hi Martin,

Not sure if you are aware that i have a custom millwork business and full CNC router, edgebander, beam saw, vaccuum press, etc. and if you have dimensions of the cards on .dxf or similar, we can veneer whatever veneer you need on the stock and cut out the parts on my CNC machine.

I would like to do a set for my vehicle as well.

Awesome Livio. I do quite a bit of woodworking myself, but I'm not a pro and I don't have your equipment. Your shop would be great to do a run. I'm thinking of a few different veneers, but leaving the upholstery pad uncovered so people can add what they want. Certainly the way Porsche added the leather is easy for most people to do - no stitching, just glue. Personally I want to do a set in light grey Alcantara with a dark veneer.

Rather sure that several Rennlister's, like also myself, would love to take you up on such possibility!
For example I have been looking for a long time now for the factory rosewood doorcard pieces, and thus far no luck what-so-ever (whoever have them in their cars keep them, and not obtainable otherwise that I know of).
So: do tell us more, please.

I got very very lucky - one day a customer came to Sean's shop with a nice 90S4 with the wood kit. It was a little faded but included the door cards, shifter surround and ash tray plus the round clock. Customer hated it and for some $ and replacement parts he parted company with it.

It is being refurbished to match my new steering wheel from Gary - 964 wood & leather IIRC. Will go nicely with the new pair of 12 way heated sport seats that just arrived from Rob Budd.

About 15 years ago I turned down a great deal on a new Caddy STS because it had a wooden steering wheel (old fogey's car) - how times change
