Default Seat Belt Relay and Chime for 1979

Hello,

I am curious, my "Fasten Seat Belt Light" illuminates for a few seconds on start up but I have no buzzer or chime. Would this be limited to relay replacement or is there somewhere else to start looking.

Any help appreciated, thanks!

IIRC same on my early cars - just lights up and goes out.
Would have thought it would not go out until the drivers belt was fastened.

The manual mentions an audible warning as well. Does the relay chime or buzz?

Is yours a "euro" or a US-delivered car?

RoW markets don't have the chime, just the light.

On mine, IIRC, there is not a seatbelt chime, just the buzzer that comes one when the key is in the first position. Listen carefully in the video below:

I think the buzzer is relay unit 928.618.102.02 and the chime is relay unit 928.618.102.03 which is pin compatible. Not entirely sure but 928.618.102.03 seems to supersede 928.618.102.02. Seems the functions are at least very similiar between these - although on the earliest cars (77-79) the parking lights were not monitored (since both relays have the same connections for these - they likely could be added). I assume 928.618.102.02 was used for a few more years too? maye 80-82?

So I think if you plug a 928.618.102.03 into an early car you will get a chime instead of a buzz, no other changes required, who wants to test?

People used to bypass the seatbelt "switch" on early cars, no idea if that was a 928 practice as well.

Okay, so if my light is working properly but I have no sound, I can assume a bad relay?

Alan,

I did find a 928.618.102.03. It has two extra pins (58L and R I believe ) and won't fit in the CE on my 79, with those pins bent out of the way, the chime works with door open but not with seat belt warning light.

Strangely, my original relay also woke up and now buzzs but again, only with doors open.

Was your original unit a 928.618.102.02? the ones I have seen seem to have both light connections for 58L & 58R - so maybe there is a 928.618.102.01 or 928.618.102.00 as well (do you have one of those?).

Ahh I just checked and 928.618.102.01 & 928.618.102.00 are both available used and seem to have no 58L/58R connections - but do have the rest. I suspect that's what you had in there...?

Probably then the .02 & .03 are more similar and probably both chime, and likely one or both of .00 & .01 only buzz...

Anyone know for sure?

Alan,

You are correct. I just double checked and I have 928.618.102.00.

So from all the posts, I am assuming that the "fasten belts" light illuminates for a few seconds with no buzzer or chime.

The buzzer or chime only works when key is in position #1 and the door is open.

Is this correct?

thanks

Well without the 58L & 58R connections it connot do the warnings for door open & marker lights on (e.g. HL switch in Position 1 or 2 [of 0-2]), or the door open and a parking light on (e.g. turn signal in L or R - causing one side of markers to come on with ignition off). So the only things left it can do are the key in & seat belt warnings.
