Default Smoked Out Lenses with Vinyl Wrap

I had my tail light lenses at one time smoked out with Nightshades tail light spray paint. Too Dark - not enough light was getting through. A friend of mine suggested using smoked out vinyl wrap designed for lenses. Thought I'd give it a go. If you were interested in doing and wanted to see what it looked like, here you go!

Smoked? I think those lenses were left on the BBQ a little too long.

The two tone is not my cup of tea. Looks too much like the rockers were sprayed to cover up rust and the nose was blended in to cover a chipped bumper. I live in the rust belt and see this every now and then. I'm not a fan of tinted lenses either. Maybe it looks different in person.

Ed/Dave - Thanks for the compliments! My Avatar was from Sharks in Hell!! Yeah!

Matt - I'm only calling what the manufacturer calls it! LOL

ImoOOO- Never knew rust to attach to aluminum and plastic???
Anyway, it's actually for stone chips as it's a thicker paint.

A public reply to some of my PMs.

I purchased the vinyl film(Smoke Out Tail Light Vinyl Film) from MetroRestyling. http://www.metrorestyling.com/Smoke-...mktailfilm.htmhttp://http://www.metrorestyling.com...mktailfilm.htm. Good product and timely shipping. Here's and excerpt from the website:

Metrorestyling lens films are designed to bond to your lights with optically clear non-permanent adhesive giving your vehicle an aggressive look while not significantly changing the output color of your lights. These high quality kits are designed to ensure protection from stones and give a factory installed appearance that will last up to 7 years. These durable kits can be used on headlights, turn signals, and taillights. This inexpensive upgrade can quickly and easily give your vehicle a professional custom look. You can be sure that Metrorestyling high performance kits are non-damaging and non-permanent. This makes them a great option for leased vehicles and uninstalling the kits quick and easy. Our Smoke out Film Kits are universal and with a few simple measurements, you can be on your way to quickly and easily giving your vehicle a professionally installed, customized look. Our large sheets are easier to apply then pre-cut sheets, just apply and trim. Why pay 3 times more when its easier to install a larger sheet.

Some suggestions if you go this route -

  • Buy Extra! - It will take a few times to figure out how to do and avoid air bubbles.
  • Heat Gun is your friend
  • Buy their specialty knife - Razor thin for very detailed application
  • Buy their credit card looking applicator with the felt pad. Worth every bit!
  • Buy their small bottle of applicator
  • Take your time - All in all with a few test rounds etc, probably around 3-5 hours to do everything. It's not hard, you just can't go fast.

Enjoy!

The one that you used is the darker one of the two shades that they offer?

One of the films is for headlights (hence lighter), the other is for all other lenses.
