So if the impeller is a press fit on the drive shaft, wouldn't they have to use epoxy on it with a plastic one?
No, there is a metal ring between the plastic and the pump shaft. The outside of that metal ring has a surface treatment that makes it rough so the plastic impeller when molded sticks to it. There are pictures on here showing the plastic impeller pumps, look for them and you'll see what I mean.
So...my pump shows up yesterday from Autopartsway...and the impeller is metal. I know someone will say "I told you so". Which is fine... I have sent them an email saying their website photo shows a plastic impeller and that's what i want or refund my money.
So my question is...is the photo that i pasted on the first page of this thread...A Plastic or Metal Impeller???
It looks plastic to me....but I have never seen one up close...
Interesting. Looks like they used a stock photo which may have now been updated based on your comment to them. I just happened to seach for my 84 and it shows a picture with a gray impeller which appears metal instead of the brown one in your picture.
It seems like the only way to guarentee a plastic impeller is going through one of the 928 specialty sites that really know their inventory and product line.

Two different water pumps -
78 to 86 is 928 106 015 22
87 to 95 is 928 106 015 20
My water pumps come with the Porsche gasket 8>)
When using a PKensioner you can use either water pump - so we supply the cheaper of the two Laso one's which at the moment happens to be the 78 to 86. About 12 months ago it was the other way around.

Kent the water pump will say Laso on it and made in Germany. Anything else and it is a fake.
Laso has not made a WP with a metal impeller for over two years. Porsche has not supplied a WP without a plastic impeller for even longer.
I could have spent a grand on a new Porsche water pump, but decided to go with the Guardian instead, after hearing about impellers eating the block, etc, stripping the teeth from the belt and crashing the valves.
So far it's worked flawlessly! It's furnace hot here in Vegas too. Money was never an issue for me, reliability was my major concern. Time will tell. I can change out a pump like most on this forum, but having to pull the heads because of bent valves, would be a real PITA, besides costing an arm and a leg.
Ok, so apropos waterpumps: I have a guardian in my car (with the stock tensioner) as well. What is the longterm reliability of these? When I put it on, it sounded like a great innovation. Any longterm reliability data / feedback in the mean time?
I have had a better opportunity to look at the pump closer. It is a LASO and the correct one for my car...but it must be old stock given the metal impeller (as per Rogers comment). I hope they have the newer plastic designed in stock...cause i'm not interested in installing this one.
