heres my WP dilemma...

my car has/had the WP replaced by PO in 3/2009. the WP is a Laso from 928 Itnl. currently under 2K miles since.

I pulled it today to inspect it and the block because I have had a whining noise I have been trying to track down. The impeller is metal and VERY rusty. I even think, after inspection, that it rusted to the block at one point. there are a few gouges on the block. the car sat in a showroom for some time ( months), before I bought it.

the pulley has play, and I think the bearing is shot. surprising with under 2000 miles on it.

I happen to have a spare motor, and I pulled that pump as well to inspect it and see if I could use that one. It turns out to be a rebuild by Autopac (as found on ebay) and has a 928 number on the casting. Its also metal impeller but not rusted (there is however alot of rust staining on the block) and the bearing seams fine.

Should I use the rebuild with unknown mileage or buy a new Laso?

note the differences in finish and the shaft position in relation to the impeller.

the gap between the impeller and the pump body is consistent on both.

Laso from 2009 with under 2K miles

the impeller

the Autopac

small gouge in my block from the rusted impeller, I was able to sand down the high spots with emery cloth

If I was doing the job I would use a new laso pump.

What's the return policy? I would try to return it then buy a pump from Roger.

They are selling old stock, or worse some of the knock off pumps Roger sent back some ago.

Granprixweis928,
The rebuilds by autopac is were all the failures started - rebuild of rebuilds. No reputable 928 parts supplier sells rebuilt pumps anymore. I will not sell a Porsche rebuild.
The Laso is old and judging by the rust the coolant mixture was not good and that would have taken its toll on the seal cartridge - low miles is not always a good thing.

Not surprising. Seals dry out when the car sits. When seals dry out, they leak. When seals leak, coolant gets into the bearings. When coolant gets into the bearings, they corrode. Don't let your bearings corrode... drive the car.

Not all rebuilds are bad. As Roger said, the problem is castings getting reused too many times, and the rebuilder not throwing them out when they got too worn to be rebuilt properly. It's a shame really, because the original Porsche castings are much better than the Laso. They could easily be rebuilt IF there was a rebuilder who (a) used good parts and (b) paid attention to how those parts went together.

But the reality is that you don't know whether the rebuild you have is any good, or not-- you can't tell by looking. Yours is a non-interference motor but there is still the risk of the metal impeller eating the block-- one of the failure modes for a rebuilt pump is for the bearing cartridge to migrate within the casting (because of a worn casting bore), pushing the impeller into the block.
That's a risk that few would be willing to take.

Seriously? The pump is from 2009, I believe that Laso's were all metal impeller then...

For future reference, the Water pump that Autopartsway send me had a metal impeller, which I am in the process of returning. The Photos they used on their website shows a plastic impeller (pls note, they are not accurate) I will be calling Roger for a replacement. I hate were the CDN $ is going now and shipping costs...

Roger can ship by DHL and the fees are very reasonable. Personally I drive down to the border and pick up when I can to save money. Obviously a little farther for you though. Or you can go USPS.

Ok this thread got me wondering. I bought a pump here in the UK for my S4 a while back which I haven't got around to putting on yet. I believe it is a new Laso pump. Everything looks exactly like the first picture on the thread however the bit at the top where the part number and logo is has been ground/machined to remove the part number and logo. WTF! Has anyone ever seen this before?

Roger can send it USPS and the border fees will be low or nothing.

Interesting - can you post some pics?

The only parts I've bought that had the part number and logo ground off were original surplus Porsche ABS relays - they had a very neatly ground square on one side of the aluminium relay casing which remove the porsche triangle and part number. The other side with the date and manufacturer (SHO) was left intact.

No idea why Porsche got rid of them - possibly just due to age on the shelf (they were made in 2000-ish), but I was pleased to get 3 of them for $15 ea.
