It really is tempting. These motors are a thing of beauty.

I'ts amazing to me how well Porsche managed to update this motor.

How similar are the new V8s?

It is just hard to imagine lessons learned with the 928 motor didn't carry over into the Cayenne 4.5L V8 for 2003. My 2004 Cayenne motor definitely looked related..

When 911s went to water cooling with the 996, those motors were not similar to the old 911 motor. But the Porsche GT3s still used the old air cooled 993 case and were still dry sumped. That only recently changed.

I did a quick search and found very little, but this article says they are similar:

Given the bonnet of my Turbo S is about the same height as the roof of my 928 I think it is a pretty safe assumption that the Cayernne motor is somewhat taller than tha tof the 928 which is a very compact design [too compact?] given how it fits into such a low bonnet line. I doubt there is a more squat Vee 8 motor in existence and if there is interested to know what it might be.

Having said that, if one could shoe horn a Turbo S motor into a 928 that would be truly awesome, given it is somewhat awesome pushing a 2.5 tonne dustbin truck along.

Regards

Fred

I've read that Ford did a lot of looking at the 928 motor before doing the mod8 4.6L, but buying other brands and taking them apart for study is common in the auto industry as much as learning others good ideas as learning bad ones.

They didn't learn that much from 928, 944 and 968 engine. Both Cayenne and 996 block are open deck design. There is very good manufacturing reasons to do that and many other modern engines use same design. Its just that it makes blocks weaker than well designed closed deck setups. 996 cylinder tower D-chunk crack problem is one result of Porsches money saving.

If the motor would be in Germany where my 928GTS currently resides ... Cheaper than a rebuilt of the current motor.

Andy,

I'd gladly give you 5K for your GTS motor... Maybe even your old one, if it was in good shape.

Rod type can't be said with just VIN. Change was done in September 14th 1993 on engine assembly line. First engines to get 2R version were M28/49 manual engine 85 R 00533 and M28/50 automatic engine 81 R 50597. To what VIN these engines ended up is not know. Also its not known if some later VIN cars got engines build before that date. Engines were not installed in sequence. Some cars put together few months after September 14th change could get engines which used 1R rods. But RS820175 is so late '94 MY VIN that its almost 100% sure it got 2R's. Though only way to know for sure is to check engine number. Since RS820175 is or was manual gearbox car it should probably be M28/49 engine type in case engine was original for the car.

I would buy two inferior 1R GTS motors in that shape at $5k each if you can find them for me...

At present Porsche want $16k including all taxes for a short GTS block on an exchange basis. That would include the following:

- Porsche re-worked block with new formulation alusil liners to cure oil consumption (they do work)
- crank
- girdle
- 2R rods
- genuine Porsche rod bearings
- genuine Porsche main bearings
- 8 GTS pistons with 4 out of 8 oil return holes drilled
- GTS crank
- oil pump
- oil thermostat

The assembly carries a 1yr warranty with unlimited milleage...

Thus this low mileage engine at $10k appears to be quite a steal...
