Welcome Ed, Your car looks great ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Hook up w/ some locals, read up on things to check first, don't assume anything has been done unless you check it out and she will be a good runner![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Dave
Edit: also 85 didn't come w/ 3rd break light, so that was added too.

Welcome
Seems someone spent some time and money on this car - wheels, engine, spoilers - that bodes well for general maintenance etc too. How's the interior?
Since you have an S4 engine you do need to pay attention to the timing belt service - soon unless a recent change is documented

Thanks for your replies.
Some back ground:
I am an old SoCal Hot Rodder that grew up on 60s Muscle Cars. My very first car was the 1969 Dodge Charger. Mopars where my thing till recently.
The things I love about the Porsche is the over the top engineering, and the feeling from the seat as it delivers top performance from the word go.
Also it’s wicked looks and the prestigious name that invokes respect by all comers.
This 928 just feel out of the sky mere block from my home. $10,200. It was mine. I first joined up with the PCA here in Kansas City. Met some great guys, really made me felt like part of the club very fast.
Answers:
1. Oil filler neck is plastic
2. Was told the water pump was replaced and the fuel pump to. (Word of
mouth is not the way I work, it will be checked soon.
3.There is no 3rd brake light.
4. Overland Park KS
5. No cats, no muffler to speak of either
6. Interior has a lot of heat damage do to the sun. Carfax stated it spent 10
years in Florida. West Palm Beach and Port St Lucy. 1 registration in NY
Ohio, Missouri, Kansas for 3 years.
Questions: So is the 5.0 and the 5.4 use similar blocks, bore or strokes?
With no cylinder liners, I would think it would be stroked.
Where to look for engine numbers to tell what year the engine is?
Whomever did the mods, I’d guess was in the early 1990s. But then why not trade up to a new model? Lots of questions??

As already said someone went to a lot of trouble to put an S4 engine in the car.
The engine number is down to the left of the thermostat housing.
VIN number would tell us a lot about the base car.
Looks like it also has S4 brakes.
Oil filler would be plastic on an S4.
TB change is critical and hopefully that was done when they changed the water pump. If no proof of this being done put it high on your maintenance schedule. Check the TB tension & condition asap to be safe.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

Hi Ed, congratulations on the car. I bought also a 1983 928S, Black, with a S4 engine swap and S4 brakes swap as well. As someone mentioned, one previous owner had a lot of trouble to put this engine in the car, but the power base line is much better. I came from a muscle car background too, but this car handling is a totally differente feel. My car also came with no cars, no muffler...what made it very noisy (guess I'm just old), but next step for me is to add some mufflers...lets keep in touch to exchange information about this. Enjoy the car, and this group, vere nice guys. Welcome from Brazil, best regards.

When did they start using plastic filler necks? Late 87?
Ed the 5.0 and 5.4 are pretty much identical, they just stroked it a bit to get the .4 displacement increase. They also changed the crankcase vent system a little to compensate for the deeper stroke, and added a baffle in the pan that encloses the oil pickup.
