I've used several over the years - this stuff is the best, hands down.

Marvel smells the best. I put a couple oz of MMO in along with the Techron a few times a year.

BG Products makes a nice additive (44K System Cleaner) but it's pricey.

Good catch on the Octane boost. Maybe we are doing more harm than good by trying preventative maintenance.

Perhaps a good time to reiterate what "Octane Boost" and similar products actually do...

Typical claim is "Increases octane rating 10 points!". Yep, probably does that. An octane "point" is 0.01 octane number - increasing the octane rating 10 points means that you improved the octane rating of that tank perhaps from 91.0 to 91.1 R+M/2. Big whoop!!

I filled up at a Shell station today with their premium (naturally) - I think they call it V-Power. On the sign it says it contains "nitrogen enrichment", and shows a couple of valves. After 10K miles, the valve with the lower quality gas looks dirty while the Shell gas valve looks brand new. Maybe major brands of gas already include all the additives we need. Maybe.

Thought that Techron & Mobil One were the only two non Porsche products that Porsche ever recommended for their vehicles?

BG is some variation on Techron.

MMO is good for anything, some in gas, some in oil.

Ran out of gas once, not in a 928, middle of the urban boonies, poured in two bottles of additive and made it a couple miles to a gas station.

The primary ingredient of MMO (and WD40) is Stoddard solvent - not sure of the wisdom of adding solvent to your oil....

Except, maybe, right before an oil change.

Is that for the 928 or personal consumption?

On a general note, I often wonder if these additives do any real good but if they did harm would they not be up for a good stiffing legally? Bit risky for them if so.

I doubt that good branded names like STP would market something that did not work to some extent. In the fuel I use Redline fuel system cleaner occasionally and have also tried STP octane boost. Says on the bottle it contains jet fuel but that has a pissy low octane rating [it is a paraffin cut] so no idea how that could boost anything octane wise. Maybe they just stick asome super high octane fuel in that bottle, charge you uber bucks per unit volume of the stuff so that as Wally says, it improves octance "a couple of points" to get round the legal angle. They then rely on the placebo effect to sell their products.
