Exactly my point.

You guys do a lot of work, and testing on *your* products.
So you can sell them.
There is no motivation for you to share your research, or to give the addresses of suppliers...
No one should expect you to.

But when people on this list do a supercharger project on their own, they share with everyone here.
Parts sourcing, research, pictures, costs, testing info, etc...

So I'm telling people not to expect places like Devek to share their secrets,
but that I think it is cool that we all share what we know as we do our own
private investigations into pistons, cranks, coatings, etc...

On a side note, I was just looking at a Summit Racing catalog,
and I see forged cranks rated at 1500 HP, for $654.00...
Forged rods, rated to 700 HP, set of 8 for $354.00...
Set of 8 forged pistons, for $350.00...
Supercharger kit for LT-1, $2,995...

So now you know why some of us still consider a LT-1 engine swap...

Porsche engines are great, but damn, they are expensive to hot-rod!

I've got my 2K lb. engine stand and buret on on order.....
I've got a complete S4 engine ready to be torn down.....
I'm currently looking into dial bore gauges and micrometers.....
I've got a 968 and a 944 S2 piston at my disposal.........

Hold on to your hats folks, the data is about to fly

Let's see what makes this thing tick.....

oops...

2 We, unlike individuals, have considerable risk selling our own internally developed products such as stroker cranks and kits, belly pans, sway bars, headers and exhausts, springs and shocks, brake adapters, etc.

3 We do not copy other folks products after they have spent money and time doing the development work...if someone is building a product for the 928 that we think is a good product, we buy it from them. for resale RATHER than copy it and then sell it..... It is a win-win relationship.

4 If folks want to do the development and testing and deal with the liability associated with developing new performance products, then they too should recover their costs...This is capitalism. Read Atlas Shrugged....

5 We are very glad that others are now moving forward with different venues of development....Keep it up. Go for it Adam, John, Tim and others... if you come up with something that works, test it to death and decide to go to market with it and carry the liability...let us know, we will be happy to sell it...and not copy it!

Just browsing the archives on all this stuff...and perhaps bump it to the top for more discussion. Amazing the info that is really stored on here for one subject matter or another. Thanks JD!!

With Nikasil bores can you use standard pistons and rings? I think you can if you don't use chrome rings?

If so maybe a Chevy piston could be obtained with the correct bore (no problem) dish (no problem) and pin to crown distance (probably not a big problem) The Porsche rod could bushed on the small end to mate with the Chevy pin I suppose. Might work.

Thats pretty much the plan if you go that route.

Joel the big stroker motors use chevy rods already . The NASCAR boys use nickasil on their cast iron motors (800 + hp)because it has less friction and makes a few more HP . We should have a nickasil 928 6.5 motor running very soon with "chevy " pistons .

What if I want more bore and to add boost? A 104mm bore with the resultant wall thickness is not a good combinaton with boost.

Hey Brendan,

Nothing magical about the 104mm bore other than it's a stock 968/944 bore.

I'm going to opt for a chevy 4.060 piston, which yields a 103.xxx bore. This will also allow me to run the correct size wrist pin. You could conceivably run any bore size you like between 100mm and 104mm, to suit your needs for a blown/turboed application.

Also the 944S2/968 blocks that run the 104mm pistons are siamesed, if you ran a bore that size with a full water jacket, I'd think you would benefit from filling in the bottom of the water jacket with some engine cement for stiffness.

The 104mm bore leads to how thick of a bore wall? 4mm? I think there are a few here that would know this number. I would worry about the wall, in its reduced state, "mushrooming" under the pressure created by more fuel and air.

Adam - With the 4.060 piston - is taht going to save you money with the non-custom piston size? I have a thought that if we could have JE just fry up whatever pistons we need, and not worry about the bore surface (if its sleeved or nikasiled) we could do a really nice bottom end using rods and pistons from off the shelf. Staying away form "custom" "porsche suited" rods and pistons will open a qhole world of options. Imagine being able to pick 'em out of a summit cataloug.

What are you saying about the wrist pin?
