Jalopnik used car face off--Ferrari Mondial vs 928!
The brown on brown S4 looks particularly clean. Gee--I wonder which one to vote for...?

I've owned 4 928's with my current OB being my oldest, longest and favorite now. Going on 5 years. I'll never sell her. Runs like a beast and been very solid and reliable. Even my AC has (always) blown cold without fail which is untypical. I just bought an 85 QV Mondial Cab this week to keep the 928 company. It's in the shop getting a belt service. I guess I only like "under appreciated" cars.
To me - the 928 has all the merits of a collector super car. Aluminum body, ground up design, fastest car in the world (when it came out). Timeless GT. It should be worth 100k and up by now. Same for the Mondial. 4 seat convertible. Perfect for a family man to take his young kids for a spin. Throw in a v8 gate shifter and what can be better than that!? They said the Dino's were worthless once too. Ya never know. I didn't buy them for show, I bought them to drive and drive they do. Smiles for miles. I've driven many more expensive cars - the smile on my face is the same.

928 wasn't ever fastest car in the world, not even close. Just fastest car sold in USA for one or two years during early eighties. During entire 928 production it was possible simply to walk into German dealers and buy several different cars which were faster. Some of them were even four door models like Alpina B10 biturbo made 1989-94 which was clearly faster than any 928 at 181mph.

I stand corrected but my point was market value in my market- USA. Slower and less advanced muscle cars are going for way way more. My point was the 928 deserves to be worth more. I don't care either way, I'll never sell mine. PS MY is a 79. I recall reading many other "super cars" of that vintage weren't faster yet today are worth multiples more.

Here is my new toy being picked up from the PO's house. All records to the window sticker just like my 928. Long term 2nd owner just like my 928. Can't wait to get her back from the Indy with her new belts so I can rev her hard!

My brother has an '89 Mondial T, the transverse model. The sound of the engine is amazing. You need skinny feet/shoes to drive it. The acceleration feel about the same as an S4. If you are going to buy a Mondial, get the T model, they are a lot better than the previous mode/years.

Tough call.. Both the undeserved stepchildren of each marque. Personally the gated shifter wins over an auto performance aside. Congrats on the mondial. Love the convex rims on the coupe they showed mondial T coupe is a really nice car..

Too late. Already bought the QV pictured. I drove and planned to buy a T. Then much like my plan to buy a 928 GTS five years ago, an older model caught my eye. I concluded 10x the price wasn't 10x more smiles per mile... I also liked that the OB 928 was non interference. I like that the QV doesn't need a engine out belt service. Sometimes simpler is easier. Les things to break. No ABS, no power seats, no sunroof (928), no power steering (qv), no computers, etc. I don't need a rocket anymore. I like the pure experience of the older "slower" cars these days. I've owned plenty of newer, faster, more expensive cars. I'm into "vintage" lately.

Three Wheelin'
both are great cars, always had a soft spot for the Mondial also.

Looking forward to hearing about your experience/ownership. Great to know no engine out needed for belt service. Enjoy the new toy!

I looked at Modials for a while & 328s; they're cool no doubt. But just not in the same class as a 928 to me, in looks or anything else. Not that I wouldn't still love to have either of those "F" cars mind you. btw, your's looks really nice in the classic red/tan combo.
