Buying a 928 from the clueless…..
I've always wanted a 928 since I spotted one in college, many many years
ago. This week I called or responded to three advertisements for 78' or 79'
guards red cars with manual tranny's. One seller said he was too busy to
supply additional photo's (only one provided), the other said he would send
me additional photo's and several days later, none have shown up. The third
and final seller never returned my email nor called me, and they were a dealership…
.I guess you'd think that if you wanted your car sold, you'd make the effort etc…..
The older I get the more clueless people I run across! Rant over!

No surprise if it is craigslist where it is FREE to advertise and easy to list often the sellers have little invested in putting up an add. So yes they are often pretty unmotivated.
Just keep looking it is a numbers game. Nice cars are out there.

be very cautious of sellers like that......... under maintained 928's can cost THOUSANDS to bring up to a reliable standard....."project" 928's often will cost $10k to end up with a nice $5k car....its rarely worth it
Spending a bit more $$$$ up front for a properly maintained 928 is ALWAYS the way to go...and no 928 is going to be perfect, since they are at best 20 years old, some approaching 40!!!

There's quite a few nicely maintained 928s that have been posted on here for sale. Check periodically or search the threads.
Cheaper than buying one that requires a lot of work, but there's still work left to be done that you can enjoy wrenching still.

When you do look at one spend as much time inspecting the underside as the shiny side .... as mentioned buying one is the inexpensive part of owning one.
When it comes time to buy parts they are for a $100,000 car with low production. And expect to pay $125 per hour or more for Porsche level service. Typical repairs easy run $2,500 or so a year, get one that has been neglected/parked for several years and it is easy to spend 10k making it a reliable functioning car BEFORE paint and interior.
that said Yesterday as I was going north on the 55 FWY guy in a later Z car with trick wheels and tons of negative camber slows beside me runs down his passenger window and gives me a thumbs up . Then blips his throttle and motors on....Pretty funny considering the condition of the old very brown 1980.

That guy appreciates a nice classic car regardless of condition. At the last local meetup I overheard one of the 911 owners tell a 928 owner how intimidating the 928 looks when you see it coming at you in your rear view mirror.

Here in Indiana the 911 guys I know in PCA love when the 928's show up at events, regardless of condition. Brought the grey one to an autocross event, in the awards meeting they thanked me for bringing a porsche they don't normally get to see. Respect for them.
Look for a 928 that has been with the same owner for 15 years or longer. Patience. They are out here. And only enthusiasts like us really want them for their own.
I've got three here in Indiana, all low dollar cars, all daily-capable, all cross-ccountry capable. In fact, with our 'burb down for repairs, all we have had for the last 6 months is 928 cars to drive.

Have to admit that to sell them on the fact that I am faster I can get pretty close to the bumper and move quickly side to side so they can see me in both outside mirrors

There are certainly a lot of clueless sellers in many mediums. It is amazing how some people post an ad and maybe a really bad photo or 2 or 3 or 4, that show you next to nothing, say nothing as to the condition of the car other than "ran great when it got parked xx years ago", don't mention if it is auto or 5 speed, say nothing about mileage on odo, don't show the interior, on and on, then don't bother to return phone calls, or call you back at 11:45 pm, or send you a text in gibberish that may make sense to a 12 year old girl.....rant over....been through it recently, not fun....

I have a 1983 928S US model with the 5 speed limited slip differential I have owned for 7 years and would consider selling in the $10k dollar range. I can provide you all the photos you would like - the color combination is ruby red metallic with full burgundy leather interior. If you're patient, screamin' deals on great cars show up here on a fairly regular basis. Reading the forum looking for them will educate you about the cars, or you could have your boy do it for you and educate both of you as you consult on his results.
Do a thread title search in this forum for "for sale" and you'll get some idea of what I'm saying.
