Fiberglass Rear Wing Group Buy? (Can we Pin this to the top please?)
Hey all,
I live in San Diego (well, Oceanside), and down south a ways there is a Shop that a very clever rennlister found called Betterbodies. They sell all sorts of wings, panels, etc for Porsches and other "sports cars"
I went to go visit today to see for myself what a 189 dollar Fiberglass rear wing looks like...
Well it looks pretty darn good as long as everyone understand that prep, prep, and more prep are the first three stages in about 4 for making sure it looks good. For pic of the unpainted wing see the "painted wing NR" thread.
Anyway, long story short: I spoke to one of the guys there, and got some info that some may be interested in. He obviously does his own forming and molds there, and he just sold the last two of the last batch, but he is currently doing another batch. He assumes that these will be done the middle of next week.
Very very helpful, low stress shop Very close to the Mexican Border. Like I can see Tijuana or however you spell it. After all that border town likeness, in the back garage there was a 996. Funny.
He explained that the 189 is already a steal (which it is compared to other suppliers), and that if I can get OVER 10 people together, then the price goes to 150 plus shipping.
Thats pretty much it. The wing looks exactly like the normal one, except that its grey. Personally, its perfect for me being hollow with a hole in the bottom part, since I plan on placing a third brake "strip" in it. The hole will surely aid in the whole process there. He said it also aids in out-gassing from the inside.
So I guess post here if you want one for 150, and if we get ten, we need the money up front to him, he makes them and ships them.
To a previous comment about him not taking credit cards, I am sure there are numerous reason that revolve around the chargers incurred, as well as PCNA. He is quite well hidden.
I will let it sit over the weekend, and see what comes up. I'm fine with 189 and getting it prepped and ready to put one just as I sell the original *(which is for sale now)*

And if JOHN D (since he has filters for his name) could *pin* this that would be great.....

Can we pin this up at the top? Or do we not do this for non-rennlist sponsors?

With a fair size roll of Fiberglas and a few different types of resins in the garage I am not really worried about the "large hole". but I would like to know more about it as well.
Weissach, did you get any pic's of the under side of the wing?

Wow, I didn't expect this much interest when I posted the original heads up.
Brendan, let me know about your original wing, you can e-mail me privately. Also, I have a friend interested in a fibreglass one. Hopefully we can get 10 people interested! Keep us informed about the total number and when you hope to do the group purchase. Thanks for looking into this for everyone.

Hole.
The hole is in the middle of the bottom side, and is approx an inch in diameter. I also was thinking of the noise this may create.
I am NO ENGINEER/SCIENTIST, but is not the idea of a wing to have air flow OVER it, instead of under it, thereby creating a....
Wait, well, I think air will not specifically be going PAST the hole at high speed, will it? I simply thought of making a small cover for it, with some holes for the breathing of the inside of the unit, which is what the hole is there for.
The weight of the wing is quite small in comparison to the original. The rubber wing, I believe, is not holly, and is infact solid or close to it.
Think of it this way. If people are paying about 20 bucks for shipping a 3 foot long box across the country, then it couldn't weigh that much.
The only reason I am getting a fiberglass wing is because I want to mount a brake light in it. I will not cut up my perfect OEM wing to do that, so I will sell it to pay for the new wing and paint and prep. My car is even BLACK, so the black rubber matches my car already.
I know 189 for one, or 150 if we can get this group buy together is a GREAT deal, but if someone wants originality, then finding an orginal wing would be a better idea. It will obviously be more, since, well, its an original part.
That was my diclaimer - So who's up for some fiberglass!

Keith - No other parts for the 928 (as he laughed, as in, "for you and other 13 people in the country? no")
He said he could get the aero mirrors for 400, but thats not a specific quote.

We are at 4 or 5 right now. If we can get more than 10 by the middle of next week, that when they will ship, since thats when he said they would be popping more out of the molds.
To the question of hardware, I was informed that there is a hardware set included. I can get more info on WHAT that would entail if required. Pretty much thats going to be four bolts. I don't know what else we would need.
Its obviously different for people with the earlier cars.
