the old very brown 1980, 5 spd trans problem
#17
THE OLD VERY BROWN 928 decided it needed a new water pump before it would consider leaving Mr Brown's Precision Motorwerks and the old fan clutch was also no longer clutching....even AFTER two tubes of silicon
I think it is now done but is still parked there tonight and may well develop some other symptom
Have to say how ever I have NEVER before driven a 928 where the trans shifted like it was supposed to never ever !! The early Porsche design works GREAT if you replace all the wear items and put it together right..... AWESOME gearbox !!
So much smoother with new motor mounts and nice low miles trans mounts also huge change in the feel of the car...

Put on those new original Porsche motor mounts and what a difference ! The old solid rubber ones. Then while Grant was torqueing the crank bolt noticed how the engine moved. The shock absorbers used on the early cars to control movement damper vibration had seen better days. But they are NLA , long out of production. Greg however quickly recalled a similar application and with a couple minor modifications that engine is now suspended and not going to be bouncing around.
Really is awesome to be able to upshift downshift with no grinding or need to double clutch. So amazing what six days in "intensive care" can do for an old used and abused 928 Still looks like a POS but working great.
Got home and parked it in the driveway and my wife asked if I was going to put cardboard under it.... I said Why ? it does not leak anymore !
And in a mildly ironic way....I pretty much proved my often used and quoted statement that some old 928 that is for sale is about $10,000 away from being a $5,000 car !! But I my case it would be hard to get $5,000 So I guess I just have to keep it and take it to the track.
But, but I only paid a little less than $2,000 when I bought it several years ago.

Things definitely started down the wrong road, when I took the cover off of his transmission and said "How the hell did that happen?" (Not a good sign when the guy that's had hundreds of these things apart hasn't seen something like this before.)
It was definitely time for a "core" transmission that had more than just scrap metal inside.
I'd been teasing Jim, near the end of last week, that we still had one or two parts he hasn't used left in the parts room....
And then the water pump and the fan clutch job popped up.
I think we all quit laughing, sometime Tuesday. Grant (uber mechanic, extraordinary fabricator) required medication, yesterday afternoon.
And then today, I got a "wild hair" to make the engine/entire drivetrain move around a whole lot less than it did....which required some engineering and updating....but resulted in some clever new ideas on how to make the engines more "solid", without solid or harder mounts.
Fun stuff.....and it just doesn't get much better than to be able to hang out with Jim.

Doc is amazing................he rebuilt my "two" G28-03 to make one that is amazing.....with the LSD at the same time....still works great...works so great it broke my clutch shaft in TWO pieces...which was an easy fix since I had spares around....
I agree that the early transmission shifts just fine IF Doc rebuilt it...... plus I have three G28-03 around, two with LSD....so it makes it easy to stay with them....not to mention they are lighter than the later versions....my freshly rebuilt transaxle was only 122lbs....Doc says the later versions are near 150lbs.....
Bottom line...Doc rules......as if there was any doubt

Jim you should have filmed it, put it in an episode and write it all off.
Actually a 928 and a "what not to do episode" could be pretty funny. Full of opposite of typical reaction shots etc.

The problem with filming it for the show is the cost of the film crew is beyond the comprehension of mere mortals....It is one crazy "business" and I really do like it !!
typical day you are scheduled for a minimum of 12 hours and go six days a week. I was a car consultant and casting associate plus did most transportation coordinating of the cars for the episodes. Worked with various vendors for paint, interior, and parts. Best part was I got to spend fifteen weeks with Jeff, Meggan and the rest of the crew !

As the drama continued Greg, Grant and I were looking around for the hidden cameras. Wondering if Trueman Show just might have been real.....
Good news it got it to pass smog so all registered and ready to be driven so that is what I did today

How was the smog check experience? Star only?
Film it Blair Witch style, having a pro camera crew could double Greg's shop rate.
Makes me wonder if there is a market for a video of having your car repaired? Maybe a web cam?

Yes because of profiling , the 928 falls into Star only. It just barely passed the 15 MPH hydrocarbon which had a max of 198 and it blew a 198 !! But it did pass
Now no longer need to go to AAA for one day moving permits to drive to the track and can park it on the street.
