That does not answer my theory as to why the 94 ROW GTS has Cup I's. Just that the USA required a VIN change would not mean the early ROW GTS in 94 could not have been fitted with Cup I's.
Problem was more to do with too many 93 GTS cars being made and not enough sold so they had to move them in 94. USA would not let a 93 car be sold as a 94 without a VIN change. ROW may have not been that picky maybe.

ROW markets didn't care at all what MY VIN says car is. Thus there were no M718 ROW cars or '94 MY cars with Cup I wheels. What matters is when car was first registered. In this case first registration was in '94 calendar year. Thats why its 06.1994 but its very likely late '93 MY VIN and was made early summer 1993. WP0ZZZ92ZPS80**** is 1993. Where it spend almost one year before it was registered is good question. Very likely in Japanise dealer showroom waiting for customer.

Interesting comments; my GTS with a P VIN was registered in May 1992 so was probably built in late '91 then sat in a showroom in Montreal until the snow melted.......its not a Euro car

No, it was completed at production line after January 1st 1992. Thats only way it could leagally get '93 MY P VIN. It allowed '93 MY cars to be made between 01/92 and 08/93 meaning car could stay at dealer as "new" car for up to 20 months but no more than that. Whole point of assigning model year to VIN is to protect customer from over year models. Porsche used this trick to the max in 928 case with early 1992 calendar year made '93 MY P VIN and early 1993 calendar year made '94 MY R VIN cars. 964 and 968 had similar M718 cars made at the time.

ROW markets couldn't care less. This is well demonstrated by Ferrari which made ROW cars without any model year information for years and years until it became mandatory in EU countries. One way to know then ROW Ferrari was made is to check when US mode with close the same VIN was made. Ferrari used one single VIN sequence for all their cars regardless of model and market they were made for. If US VIN xxxxx1 was made in xx.xx.xxxx its likely ROW market car with VIN xxxxx2 was made right after it. One thing that confuses this is that for street cars they used only odd numbers up to VIN 74499 meaning by that time they had actually made just half number ie 37249 street cars. From VIN 75000 onwards all are street cars. They used even numbers for race cars and made very few of them compared to street machines. Thus race car 1010 was made something like 15 years later than street cars 1009 and 1011.

Sort of similar setup like Porsche with separate ROW and US market VIN sets which without knowing better makes one think cars with close the same VIN ending must have been made next to each other. In 928's case in reality there can be months and thousand or more cars between them in production line.

very interesting again thanks.

its always been a subject of discussion as to how a '93 MY could be accurate when the car was actually sold in spring '92 with obvious build and ship many months prior to selling.

Given the N VIN GTS was sold in ROW not in US Porsche were building different MYs side by side?

Would you know how many GTSs were sold in Canada in '92?

Hi Malcolm,

You can see the date that the car was built on the sticker on the door jam.
At least on mine.
Built or left the production line. Don't know.

As how many GTS were sold in 92 in Canada?
I realy would like to know that too but I think realy not many.
Your's is probably one of the very first if not the first.

They are '93 MY just by VIN number. Everything in them was same as same period N VIN ROW cars. Same parts used to make them, same possible colors and options etc. It was just a trick to fool customers. In case 01/92 - 08/92 build cars didn't sell immediatelly during that spring they could be legally sold as '93 MY and customers think they get brand new car when infact it has sat in dealer showroom for over a year already if it sold in spring 1993 for example.

Given the N VIN GTS was sold in ROW not in US Porsche were building different MYs side by side?
It was easy for factory to do it since US model had different VIN sequence to ROW cars. All they had to remember to stamp later MY into VIN. Option M718 in order papers was just for that purpose. Engine, gearbox etc came from exact same pile where ROW cars build at same time got their parts.

Would you know how many GTSs were sold in Canada in '92?
13 early 1993, 5 manual and 8 automatics, these were build 01/92 - 08/92
13 real 1993, all automatics, these were build 08/93 - 12/93
1 early 1994, manual, this was build 01/93 - 08/93
2 real 1994, both automatics, these were build 08/93 - 08/94
There weren't single '95 MY made

When these were actually sold is not known.

Were these US spec or ROW spec cars or did Canada have separate requirements? If these were US the numbers sold in Canada would impact how many were sold in the US??

^^^......as mentioned above my GTS is a US spec car but made for and sold new in Montreal in '92.

The Canadian cars are very similar to US models but most came with no rear a/c and heated seats for obvious climate reasons. The owners manual are also in French and English.

ROW cars here are mostly ex-Japanese used cars that are imported after they are many years old.

Unsure as to how sales here affect US totals, not by much if it all

If that is the case I would assume you cars vin number is listed as one of the US spec cars listed in the 928 registry which would reduce the number of US spec GTS's sold in the US to 382.

C02 USA, C03 California (those MY when there was separate model for California) and C36 Canada share same VIN set. Both countries have their separate specs as Canadian cars had kph speedo etc IIRR. C36 reduce number of cars sold in US as they are included in US VIN sets and 406 cars made. They are different compared to all other 928 in a way that these can be fairly easily imported into US unlike all ROW VIN set cars.
